{"id":326471,"date":"2025-02-12T19:01:43","date_gmt":"2025-02-12T13:31:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/?p=326471"},"modified":"2025-02-12T19:01:43","modified_gmt":"2025-02-12T13:31:43","slug":"international-criminal-court-icc","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/international-criminal-court-icc\/","title":{"rendered":"International Criminal Court (ICC)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>News: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The International Criminal Court (ICC) has recently come under global scrutiny following its issuance of an arrest warrant for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu over alleged war crimes in Gaza.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About International Criminal Court (ICC)\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The ICC is a permanent international court that prosecutes individuals for 4 serious crimes- genocide, war crimes, crimes against humanity, and the crime of aggression.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is an independent international organisation and is not part of the United Nations.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Established: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Created by the Rome Statute on 17 July 1998; became effective on 1 July 2002.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Headquarters:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The Hague, Netherlands.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Members:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It has 125 member states.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Notable exceptions: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the US, China, Russia, Israel, and India.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Languages: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Official languages include English, French, Arabic, Chinese, Russian, and Spanish.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Judges: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ICC has 18 judges who are elected by the Assembly of State Parties and have non-renewable 9-year terms.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Jurisdiction: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ICC only covers crimes committed after 1 July 2002.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can prosecute individuals only if the country where the offence was committed is a party to the Rome Statute or the perpetrator&#8217;s country of origin is a party to the Rome Statute.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It operates on the principle of complementarity, stepping in only if national courts are unable or unwilling to act.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Crimes referred to the ICC Prosecutor by the UN Security Council.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ICC has no jurisdiction with respect to any person under age of 18.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Enforcement: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ICC&#8217;s decisions are binding.
