The team adapted the Japanese technique of <strong>double filtration plasmapheresis (DFPP)<\/strong> to lower anti-H antibody levels, preventing organ rejection and making an unprecedented transplant possible.<\/p>\n<h2>About Bombay Blood Group<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0The Bombay blood group (HH) is an extremely rare blood type first identified in Mumbai in 1952 by Y.M. Bhende.<\/li>\n<li>Unlike common ABO blood types, individuals with this group <strong data-start=\"840\" data-end=\"850\">do not<\/strong> have A, B, or even H antigens.<\/li>\n<li>Due to the absence of the H antigen, individuals with the Bombay blood group cannot receive blood from any ABO group, including type O.<\/li>\n<li>They can only receive blood from another Bombay blood group donor, making transfusions and organ transplants highly challenging.<\/li>\n<li>In Bombay blood group individuals, the gene responsible for making the H antigen is mutated or absent.<\/li>\n<li>Their immune system <strong data-start=\"906\" data-end=\"936\">produces anti-H antibodies<\/strong>, which means they <strong data-start=\"955\" data-end=\"998\">cannot receive blood from any ABO group<\/strong>, including <strong data-start=\"1010\" data-end=\"1027\">O blood group<\/strong>, which contains the H antigen.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 data-start=\"1135\" data-end=\"1179\"><strong data-start=\"1140\" data-end=\"1179\">Why is the Bombay Blood Group Rare?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul data-start=\"1180\" data-end=\"1459\">\n<li data-start=\"1180\" data-end=\"1231\">It occurs in <strong data-start=\"1195\" data-end=\"1213\">1 in 4 million<\/strong> people worldwide.<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1232\" data-end=\"1384\">The prevalence is higher in <strong data-start=\"1262\" data-end=\"1286\">India and South Asia<\/strong>, where it is <strong data-start=\"1300\" data-end=\"1337\">found in about 1 in 10,000 people<\/strong> (especially in Mumbai due to genetic factors).<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1385\" data-end=\"1459\">It is <strong data-start=\"1393\" data-end=\"1411\">extremely rare<\/strong> in European populations (about 1 in a million).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>News: In a pioneering medical achievement, doctors in Chennai successfully performed a kidney transplant on a patient with the Bombay blood group, using an organ from a donor with a different blood type.
