At the invitation of French President Emmanuel Macron, Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited France from February 10 to 12, 2025. The visit was significant in strengthening the long-standing strategic partnership between the two nations, established in 1998. PM Modi<\/span> and President Macron<\/span> co-chaired the AI Action Summit in Paris<\/span>, held bilateral talks, and addressed a gathering of business leaders. The two countries also reviewed the \u2018Horizon 2047\u2019 Roadmap<\/span> agreed two years ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Key Outcomes of the PM’S France Visit<\/strong><\/span>
\n1. India-France declaration on Artificial Intelligence (AI)-<\/strong> Both nations pledged to deepen collaboration in AI research and applications, with a focus on ethical and responsible AI development.
\n2. Launch of the India-France Year of Innovation 2026 Logo<\/strong>– The official logo for the initiative was unveiled, symbolizing a shared commitment to fostering innovation and scientific collaboration.
\n3. Indo-French Center for Digital Sciences<\/strong>– A Letter of Intent was signed between India’s Department of Science and Technology (DST) and France’s INRIA to establish a dedicated center for digital sciences, promoting research and development.
\n4. Support for Indian Startups<\/strong>– An agreement was signed to host 10 Indian startups at France\u2019s premier startup incubator, Station F, fostering entrepreneurial growth.
\n5. Collaboration on Advanced Modular and Small Modular Reactors<\/strong>– A Declaration of Intent was signed to strengthen cooperation on next-generation nuclear reactor technologies.
\n6. Renewal of MoU on nuclear energy cooperation<\/strong>– India\u2019s Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) and France\u2019s CEA renewed their agreement, reinforcing the partnership in nuclear energy.
\n7. Strengthening nuclear research collaboration<\/strong>– A new implementing agreement was signed between DAE and CEA to enhance cooperation between India\u2019s Global Center for Nuclear Energy Partnership (GCNEP) and France\u2019s Institute for Nuclear Science and Technology (INSTN).
\n8. Triangular development cooperation<\/strong>– India and France issued a joint declaration of intent to collaborate on sustainable development projects in the Indo-Pacific region.
\n9. Inauguration of India\u2019s Consulate in Marseille-<\/strong> PM Modi, along with French officials, inaugurated India\u2019s new consulate in Marseille, strengthening diplomatic and people-to-people ties.

Environmental Partnership<\/strong>– A Declaration of Intent was signed between India\u2019s Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change and France\u2019s Ministry for the Ecological Transition to enhance cooperation on biodiversity conservation, climate action, and sustainable development.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

<\/a>What is the history of India-France Relations?<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

India and France have traditionally close and friendly relations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n
Post India’s Independence<\/strong><\/td>\nDiplomatic relations were established after India’s Independence.
\na.<\/strong> French aircraft and helicopters like Ouragan<\/span>, Mystere<\/span>, Alize, Alouette, Jaguar have been part of the Indian air fleet since 1960’s.
\nb.<\/strong> In 1984, France stepped in to supply nuclear fuel to Tarapur power plant<\/span> after the US backed out citing domestic constraints.
\nc.<\/strong> France supported India\u2019s space programme since its inception, like setting up Sriharikota launch site<\/span> and Centaure and Viking rocket technologies<\/span> in the 1970s.
\nHowever, the Cold War Constraints, did not let the development of a fully developed relationship.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Post Cold War Era<\/strong><\/td>\nIndia and France entered into Strategic Partnership in 1998<\/span>. \n2.<\/strong> Helicopters-<\/strong> Tata<\/span> and Airbus helicopters<\/span> will partner to produce H125 helicopters<\/span> in India.
\n3.<\/strong> Fighter Jets-<\/strong> French engine Maker Safran<\/span> to transfer 100% technology to build fighter jet engines<\/span> in the country.
\n4.<\/strong> Satellites-<\/strong> India’s space PSU New Space India Limited<\/span> and French Company Arianespace<\/span> cooperation in satellite launches.
