{"id":32747,"date":"2018-10-29T16:15:56","date_gmt":"2018-10-29T10:45:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=32747"},"modified":"2018-10-29T16:15:56","modified_gmt":"2018-10-29T10:45:56","slug":"innovation-not-eminence-is-key","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/innovation-not-eminence-is-key\/","title":{"rendered":"Innovation, not eminence, is key"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/indianexpress.com\/article\/opinion\/columns\/indian-higher-education-institutes-5389049\/\">Innovation, not eminence, is key<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>News: <\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Kapil Vishwanathan, has talked about reforms required in Higher Education in India.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Important Facts:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li>Man and Machine together has caused Rapid modernization and created a threat to environment.<\/li>\n<li>As per the Author, higher education across the globe has failed to address the changing demands of unpredictable world and environmental damage caused by it.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Demerits of India&#8217;s higher Education:<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li>In India, the better institutions of higher education tends to prepare graduates for their first job or vocation but not for life.<\/li>\n<li>Though India is moving into towards <strong>liberal arts education<\/strong>, it does not seem to be moving hand in hand with technology (A liberal arts education refers to college studies that provide general knowledge and develop intellectual ability)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol start=\"5\">\n<li><strong>What India should do:<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li>Develop new vision for education to combine technology, humanities and ethics.<\/li>\n<li>Higher education should prepare students for life, not just a career.<\/li>\n<li>Motivate students to learn to deal with the inevitable ethical challenges in daily life.<\/li>\n<li>Provide an opportunity to students to allow them to feel the sense of purpose they are studying.<\/li>\n<li>Establish learnings of the past and present with preparedness for the future.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol start=\"6\">\n<li><strong>How the Education System can ensure the above objectives?<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li>Introduce core skills module to help students develop a set of life skills, including ethical reasoning, data science, design thinking and effective communication.<\/li>\n<li>Introduce concentration module to help students to dive deep into a chosen discipline, not merely for the sake of accumulating knowledge but to develop a deep sense of inquiry and to learn to solve problems.<\/li>\n<li>Provide an arrangement to allow the connect between Teaching and Research and Development.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol start=\"7\">\n<li><strong>Suggestions for India<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li>India needs hundreds of institutes of eminence, not just six<\/li>\n<li>India needs to think beyond the current mandate of breaking into the top 500 global rankings within 10 years.<\/li>\n<li>Require regulatory flexibility to encourage Institute of Eminence to experiment.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Innovation, not eminence, is key News: Kapil Vishwanathan, has talked about reforms required in Higher Education in India.
