{"id":32798,"date":"2018-10-29T16:29:53","date_gmt":"2018-10-29T10:59:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=32798"},"modified":"2018-10-29T16:29:53","modified_gmt":"2018-10-29T10:59:53","slug":"pride-and-prejudice","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/pride-and-prejudice\/","title":{"rendered":"Pride and prejudice"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/indianexpress.com\/article\/opinion\/editorials\/pride-and-prejudice-gir-national-park-lion-deaths-5385311\/\"><strong>Pride and prejudice<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>News:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Recently 21 Asiatic lions died\u00a0 in Gujarat\u2019s Gir National Park in less than a month which raises\u00a0 serious questions about the conservation of the big cats in their only habitat.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Important Facts:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>2.\u00a0<strong>\u00a0Reasons for lion deaths:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Infighting between lion prides:<\/strong> Male lions are known to maul each other to death but they never harm females.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Viral infection:<\/strong> In 2012, the scientists from Indian Veterinary Research Institute identified the Goat Plague (Peste Des Petits Ruminants) virus in a lion carcass.<\/li>\n<li>According to a <strong>CAG report<\/strong> , more than 50 percent of the Gir lions have spilled out of the protected area and face threat of speeding trucks and trains, open wells and live wires. More than 30 lions have perished to accidents in the past two years, according to the park\u2019s records.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>3.\u00a0<strong> Supreme Court guidelines:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In 2013, the Supreme Court directed the translocation of \u201csome\u201d lions from Gir to Kuno in Madhya Pradesh(MP) which Gujarat government refused, arguing that MP has not gone by the IUCN\u2019s guidelines for translocation.<\/li>\n<li>However MP\u2019s forest officials retort that Kuno satisfies all the conditions laid down by the Wildlife Institute of India (the agency mandated to monitor the relocation of Gir lions).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>4. Way forward:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The recent deaths of the big cats should be reason enough to end such politicking.<\/li>\n<li>The wildlife authorities in Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh should not forget that an epidemic caused by a virus wiped out more than a third of the lion population in Tanzania\u2019s Serengeti National Park in the 1990s.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Pride and prejudice News: Recently 21 Asiatic lions died\u00a0 in Gujarat\u2019s Gir National Park in less than a month which raises\u00a0 serious questions about the conservation of the big cats in their only habitat.
