The Lower Ganga Canal System was started<\/strong> in 1878<\/strong>. It originates<\/strong> from the main Ganga canal in Narora, Bulandshahr<\/strong> and runs through the western and central UP.<\/strong><\/p>\n

  1. a) Cultivable command area<\/strong> >11lakh ha; b) length<\/strong> of main lower Ganga canal ~100km; c) total length of the system<\/strong> > 8000km.<\/li>\n
  2. a) It consists of a vast network of sub-canals, distributaries, minors<\/strong> to ensure equitable distribution<\/strong>; b) The system has five main water branches<\/strong>– Farrukhabad, Beaver, Kanpur, Etawah, Bhognipur.<\/li>\n
  3. a) Advanced engineering system<\/strong>s have been integrated in it to regulate water flow (<\/strong>sluice gates) and control floods <\/strong>(embankments); b) Uninterrupted flow<\/strong> of water in the canal is ensured through aqueducts, bridges etc.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    The Lower Ganga canal holds immense significance <\/strong>for the state in the following ways:<\/p>\n

    1. a) It has helped resolve the issues of water scarcity <\/strong>in lower portion of Upper Ganga canal<\/strong>; b) Construction of the canal has eased the management of Ganga water <\/strong>in many ways to ensure its benefits are accrued to UP (flood control).<\/li>\n
    2. a) The Canal has been used to provide irrigation facilities<\/strong> to key agricultural regions in the state (Aligarh, Kanpur Dehat, Prayagraj), reducing their reliance on monsoons<\/strong>. This has promoted food <\/strong>and nutrition security<\/strong> through increased yields and crop diversification<\/strong> (pulses, oilseeds).<\/li>\n
    3. a) Cascading effects of the construction of the canal are reflected in rural development<\/strong> in the region. This is due to agricultural growth<\/strong>, job creation<\/strong> and market development <\/strong>as a result of it; b) LGC has been a critical source of water for economic activities<\/strong> in the region (leather industry-Kanpur, energy production- NAPS).<\/li>\n
    4. a)Construction of the canal has been beneficial for the environment<\/strong> in the State (groundwater conservation, mitigation of soil erosion); b) Through its vast distribution network, <\/strong>the Canal has achieved seminal importance in achieving equity in water access.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      With time, challenges related to management<\/strong> of the canal are expected to arise (siltation, leakages, pollution).
