This survey covered the main channels and tributaries of the Ganga and Brahmaputra rivers, as well as the Beas River in Punjab.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-328931 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Indias-First-Comprehensive-River-Dolphin-Survey.png?resize=599%2C397&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"India\u2019s First Comprehensive River Dolphin Survey\" width=\"599\" height=\"397\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Indias-First-Comprehensive-River-Dolphin-Survey.png?resize=300%2C199&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Indias-First-Comprehensive-River-Dolphin-Survey.png?resize=1024%2C680&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Indias-First-Comprehensive-River-Dolphin-Survey.png?resize=768%2C510&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Indias-First-Comprehensive-River-Dolphin-Survey.png?w=1280&amp;ssl=1 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 599px) 100vw, 599px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Key Findings from the First Comprehensive Dolphin Survey (2021-2023)<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>The survey estimated the total population of <strong>Gangetic dolphins to be 6,324<\/strong>, with a range between <strong>5,977 and 6,688 individuals<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The study also found only <strong>three Indus River dolphins<\/strong>, all located in the Beas River in Punjab.<\/li>\n<li>The highest number of Gangetic dolphins was found in<strong> Uttar Pradesh, with 2,397 individuals. Bihar followed closely with 2,220 dolphins,<\/strong> while <strong>West Bengal recorded 815. <\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Jharkhand had 162 dolphins<\/strong>, while <strong>Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh together had 95 individuals.<\/strong> <strong>Punjab was the only state where Indus River dolphins were recorded<\/strong>, with a count of three individuals in the Beas River.<\/li>\n<li>The survey identified certain stretches of rivers where dolphin populations were either abundant (hotspots) or sparse (coldspots).\n<ul>\n<li>The <strong>Narora-Kanpur stretch in Uttar Pradesh<\/strong> was one of the <strong>coldspots<\/strong>, with an encounter rate of just 0.1 dolphins per kilometer.<\/li>\n<li>Other coldspots included the <strong>Yamuna River (Kaushambi-Chitrakoot), the Sharda River in Pilibhit, and the Rapti River from Balrampur to Sidhharth Nagar.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>On the other hand, some stretches had a high density of dolphins.<strong> In Bihar, the Chausa-Manihar stretch spanning 590 kilometers<\/strong> had an encounter rate of 2.20 dolphins per kilometer, while the stretch between <strong>Manihari in Bihar and Rajmahal in Jharkhand<\/strong> recorded an even higher encounter rate of 2.75 dolphins per kilometer. These areas were identified as key habitats for the species.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>About\u00a0Gangetic River Dolphin<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>The Gangetic River Dolphin is primarily found in the <strong>Ganges, Brahmaputra, and their tributaries in India, Bangladesh, and Nepal. <\/strong><\/li>\n<li>These dolphins are <strong>almost blind and rely on echolocation<\/strong> to detect and capture their prey. They produce ultrasonic sounds that help them navigate and hunt in murky waters.<\/li>\n<li>These dolphins prefer deep waters, particularly around the confluence of rivers, where prey availability is higher.<\/li>\n<li>They are found across seven Indian states: <strong>Assam, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Bihar, Jharkhand, and West Bengal<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The Gangetic River Dolphin is one of only four freshwater dolphin species found worldwide.
