{"id":32890,"date":"2018-10-29T17:23:21","date_gmt":"2018-10-29T11:53:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=32890"},"modified":"2018-10-29T17:23:21","modified_gmt":"2018-10-29T11:53:21","slug":"power-of-the-collective-on-intimate-partner-violence","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/power-of-the-collective-on-intimate-partner-violence\/","title":{"rendered":"Power of the collective: on intimate partner violence\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/must-read-news-articles-december-26\/v\">Power of the collective: on intimate partner violence<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Context<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Self-help groups can help address the problem of intimate partner violence<\/p>\n<p><strong>Self-help groups can help address the problem of intimate partner violence<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Violent acts, at the hands of a husband or a partner (intimate partner violence, or IPV), are distressingly common worldwide<\/p>\n<p><strong>Beliefs<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>These stem from the belief that women who don\u2019t obey or don\u2019t perform their set gender roles deserve to be beaten<\/p>\n<p><strong>Perpetuate patriarchy<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Intimate relationships are important sites where violence against women is used to perpetuate patriarchy<\/p>\n<p><strong>WHO<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The World Health Organisation estimates that almost one-third of all women who have been in a relationship have experienced physical and\/or sexual violence by their intimate partner, which affects their physical and mental well-being<\/p>\n<p><strong>Parental Violence<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Boys who witness parental violence are more likely to use it in their adult relationships; girls are more likely to justify it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Strategies<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Strategies to address IPV have included legal reforms, awareness creation drives, and strengthening of women\u2019s civil rights<\/p>\n<p><strong>Resolution Mechanisms<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>As criminal justice solutions have largely been inaccessible to socially precarious women, a more inclusive alternative is to have collective-based resolution mechanisms. The potential of large-scale groups of women, such as self-help groups (SHGs), becomes critical in the Indian context.<\/li>\n<li>India has experimented with many models of community dispute resolution mechanisms \u2014 the Nari Adalats (women courts) in various States, Women\u2019s Resource Centres (Rajasthan), Shalishi (West Bengal), and Mahila Panchayats (Delhi) \u2014 which have seen IPV as a public issue rather than a personal problem. Several NGOs have co-opted these models so that women can resolve cases of violence without getting entangled in tedious legal processes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>SHGs<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>SHGs are the most widely present collectives across regions<\/li>\n<li>The experiences of large-scale programmes offer valuable insights into action for IPV redressal within SHG-led development models<\/li>\n<li>These, as well as previous models, provide two key lessons \u2014 one, collectives of women need adequate investment for building their capacities; and two, mediation of IPV requires specialised structures to avoid manipulation by kinship relations and political affinities.<\/li>\n<li>Not all groups of women become safe spaces to discuss violence.<\/li>\n<li>SHGs must first become enabling spaces where the economic and social concerns of women are stated as priorities<\/li>\n<li>Freedom from violence must be stated as a necessary component of empowerment. It takes time for most women to recognise that violence is unacceptable<\/li>\n<li>To enable them to understand this, there must be investment in specific training, and gender analysis processes<\/li>\n<li>SHGs are mostly seen as administrative entities.
