It is the largest river island in the world.<\/li>\n<li>It is formed by the Subansiri River in the north and the Brahmaputra River in the south.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Tribes:<\/strong> Majuli is home to <strong data-start=\"1045\" data-end=\"1066\" data-is-only-node=\"\">three main tribes<\/strong>: <strong data-start=\"1077\" data-end=\"1088\">Mishing, <\/strong><strong data-start=\"1098\" data-end=\"1107\">Deori, and <\/strong><strong data-start=\"1117\" data-end=\"1136\">Sonowal Kachari.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Majuli is also famous for<strong>\u00a0a<\/strong><strong data-start=\"1596\" data-end=\"1633\">ncient pottery-making techniques<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The island is a <strong>habitat for several rare and endangered species of birds.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It is<strong> also home to vast rice fields and thriving groves of bamboo, banana, and sugarcane.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Rice cultivation<\/strong> serves as the primary livelihood for Majuli&#8217;s residents, who grow several distinctive rice varieties, including <strong>Komal Saul and Bao Dhan<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Historical significance<\/strong>: It is often called the soul of Assam. It has been recognized as the cultural capital of Assam since the 16th century.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Religious and cultural significance:<\/strong> In the 15th century,<strong> Srimanta Sankardeva<\/strong>, along with his disciple Madhavdeva, established several <strong>satras<\/strong> (monastic institutions) on Majuli Island.\n<ul>\n<li>Majuli hosts various religious festivals, with <strong>Raas Mahotsav<\/strong>, a celebration of Lord Krishna, being one of the most significant.<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"513\" data-end=\"667\">The island is the center of <strong data-start=\"543\" data-end=\"570\" data-is-only-node=\"\">neo-Vaishnavite culture<\/strong>, initiated in the <strong data-start=\"589\" data-end=\"605\">16th century<\/strong> by <strong data-start=\"609\" data-end=\"632\">Srimanta Sankardeva<\/strong> and his disciple <strong data-start=\"650\" data-end=\"664\">Madhavdeva<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"671\" data-end=\"758\" data-is-only-node=\"\">The <strong data-start=\"677\" data-end=\"713\" data-is-only-node=\"\">Satras (Vaishnavite monasteries)<\/strong> uphold this spiritual and cultural legacy.<\/li>\n<li>The Indigenous <strong>Mising community<\/strong> is particularly identified for its exquisite weaving patterns.<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>Samaguri Satra<\/strong> is particularly famous for creating vibrant, handcrafted masks used in Bhaona performances.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>News: A recent survey provided insight into the rising human-wildlife conflict (HWC) in Assam&#8217;s Majuli River Island district.
