Mount Erebus was likely formed by a hotspot.<\/li>\n<li>It is also one of only a few volcanoes in the world that <strong>contain an active lava lake.<\/strong>\u00a0The lava in the lava lake has an alkalic composition, which is typical of rift volcanoes.<\/li>\n<li class=\"topic-paragraph\">It is a glaciated<strong> intraplate stratovolcano and part of the Ring of Fire<\/strong> that encircles the Pacific Ocean basin.<\/li>\n<li>It has been<strong> active since 1972<\/strong>.
