{"id":32986,"date":"2018-10-29T17:48:51","date_gmt":"2018-10-29T12:18:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=32986"},"modified":"2018-10-29T17:48:51","modified_gmt":"2018-10-29T12:18:51","slug":"overseas-votes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/overseas-votes\/","title":{"rendered":"Overseas votes\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/opinion\/op-ed\/overseas-votes\/article22176971.ece\"><strong>Overseas votes<\/strong><\/a><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Context <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0Representation of the People (Amendment) Bill of 2017, introduced by the government during the winter session of Parliament, proposes to allow non-resident Indians (NRIs) to emerge as a decisive force in the country\u2019s electoral politics on their own terms<\/p>\n<p><strong>Amendment <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Change in Sec 20A<\/strong>: The amendment paves the way to remove an \u201cunreasonable restriction\u201d posed by Section 20A of the Representation of the People Act, which requires overseas electors to be physically present in their electoral constituencies to cast their votes<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Timeline<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Filing of PIL<\/strong>: The effort to empower NRI voters began with two PILs filed by V.P. Shamsheer, a U.A.E.-based doctor, and NagenderChindam, chairman of Pravasi Bharat in London, in the Supreme Court<\/li>\n<li><strong>Preparation of report by ECI<\/strong>: The\u00a0Election\u00a0Commission prepared a report titled \u2018Exploring Feasibility of Alternative Options for Voting by Overseas Electors\u2019 and presented it in the apex court.
