{"id":33005,"date":"2018-10-29T17:55:03","date_gmt":"2018-10-29T12:25:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=33005"},"modified":"2018-10-29T17:55:03","modified_gmt":"2018-10-29T12:25:03","slug":"lobbying-intensifies-for-indias-unga-vote-on-jerusalem","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/lobbying-intensifies-for-indias-unga-vote-on-jerusalem\/","title":{"rendered":"Lobbying intensifies for India\u2019s UNGA vote on Jerusalem\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/news\/international\/lobbying-intensifies-for-indias-unga-vote-on-jerusalem\/article22121462.ece\"><strong>Lobbying intensifies for India\u2019s UNGA vote on Jerusalem<\/strong><\/a><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Context<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The draft resolution on the status of Jerusalem to be presented on Thursday expresses deep \u201cregret\u201d on the US\u2019 stated position on Jerusalem and calls for \u201cthe final status of Jerusalem to be resolved through negotiations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Backdrop<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>International lobbying has intensified to get India on board for the session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on Thursday where the biggest platform of the UN is likely to adopt a resolution in opposition to\u00a0U.S. President Donald Trump\u2019s recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel<\/p>\n<p><strong>Arab League against the decision<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The meeting of UNGA comes in the backdrop of a similar meeting of the Arab League which has asked for reversing of the decision even as Indian diplomats indicated that they will maintain that third parties do not decide Indian \u201cforeign policy postures\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong>India remains neutral<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There was no indication from the MEA if India would support either party.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Draft Resolution<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The draft resolution on the status of Jerusalem to be presented on Thursday expresses deep \u201cregret\u201d on the US\u2019 stated position on Jerusalem and calls for \u201cthe final status of Jerusalem to be resolved through negotiations.\u201d A similar resolution was vetoed by the US at the UN Security Council although the US found itself isolated with all other members voting in favour<\/p>\n<p><strong>US watching closely the votes at UNGA<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Using a sharp tone in a tweet after the UNSC vote, U.S. ambassador Nikki Haley indicated that the US will watch the individual votes in the UNGA closely.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>India should stay away from voting<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Academic Prof P.R. Kumaraswamy, an expert on Israeli politics in JNU said that India should stay away from the voting to show its opposition to the \u201cexclusivist\u201d approach by both the Palestinian and the Israeli sides.<\/li>\n<li>US declaration on Jerusalem can not become our problem.
