It also contains:<\/li>\n<li><strong>Pyrite<\/strong> \u2013 Gives golden streaks.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Calcite<\/strong> \u2013 Causes lighter patches, reducing blueness.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Diopside &amp; Sodalite<\/strong> \u2013 Found in smaller amounts.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Major sources:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>The world\u2019s highest-quality lapis lazuli comes from the <em>Badakhshan province of Afghanistan<\/em>, where it has been mined for over 6,000 years.<\/li>\n<li>Other sources include <em>Chile, Russia, and the USA.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Historical and Cultural significance:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>In ancient times, traders in <em>India imported lapis lazuli from Badakhshan<\/em>, perhaps as long ago as 1000 BC.<\/li>\n<li>Ornaments made of lapis lazuli have been discovered at Indus Valley Civilization sites <em>(Mohenjo-daro &amp; Harappa).<\/em><\/li>\n<li><strong>Ancient Egypt<\/strong>: Ground into powder for eye makeup and used in royal ornaments.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Renaissance Europe<\/strong>: Processed into ultramarine, a rare and expensive blue pigment used by painters.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>News&#8211; Lapis lazuli has been found in many countries but the highest quality rock comes from Afghanistan\u2019s Badakhshan province.
