According to the petition, if Vishakha Guidelines are extended to the religious institutions, it would assist a lot in reducing sexually related crimes against women by gurus or leaders of that particular institution.<\/p>\n<p>3. The petition also said that\u00a0 the government should do a <strong>background verification<\/strong> of religious leaders, especially \u201cnew upcoming babas\u201d or \u201cheads of those madrasas\u201d and churches.<\/p>\n<p>4. It also sought directions to the Centre to provide adequate measures for women safety at religious places by conducting<strong> periodic checks <\/strong>by State women panels.<\/p>\n<p>5. The petition also mentioned<strong> recent instances <\/strong>such as cases of priests being accused of sexual abuse in Kerala and of self-styled gurus like Daati Maharaj, Baba Ram Rahim and Asaram Bapu.<\/p>\n<p><strong>6. About Vishakha Guidelines:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The Vishakha guidelines were introduced by the apex court in 1997 which was evolved into a parliamentary law called the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act of 2013.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-33060\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/vishakha.jpg?resize=630%2C111&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"630\" height=\"111\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/vishakha.jpg?w=630&amp;ssl=1 630w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/vishakha.jpg?resize=150%2C26&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/vishakha.jpg?resize=300%2C53&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 630px) 100vw, 630px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>7. The Vishakha Guidelines: <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It defines the\u00a0 sexual harassment in the workplace as an unwelcome sexual gesture or behaviour, whether directly or indirectly. This includes:<\/li>\n<li>Sexually coloured remarks<\/li>\n<li>Physical contact and advances<\/li>\n<li>Showing pornography<\/li>\n<li>A demand or request for sexual favours<\/li>\n<li>Any other unwelcome physical, verbal\/non-verbal conduct that is sexual in nature.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>8. All employers whether in the public or the private sector, should take appropriate steps to prevent sexual harassment.<\/p>\n<p><strong>9. Appropriate work conditions<\/strong> should be provided in respect of work, leisure, health and hygiene to further ensure that there is no hostile environment towards women and no woman should have reasonable grounds to believe that she is disadvantaged in connection with her employment.<\/p>\n<p>10. Where such conduct amounts to specific offences under the Indian Penal Code or any other law, the employer shall initiate appropriate action in accordance with the law, by making a complaint with the appropriate authority.<\/p>\n<p>11. Victims of sexual harassment should have the option to seek transfer of the perpetrator or their own transfer.<\/p>\n<p>12.
