In <strong>1971<\/strong>, India helped stop a genocide in East Pakistan and supported the creation of <strong>Bangladesh<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li>In <strong>1988<\/strong>, India sent troops to the <strong>Maldives<\/strong> to stop armed mercenaries from overthrowing its President.<\/li>\n<li>In <strong>2009<\/strong>, India helped <strong>Sri Lanka<\/strong> defeat the <strong>Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE)<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>India has recently taken action against <strong>piracy<\/strong> in nearby seas.<\/li>\n<li>During the <strong>Korean War (1951\u201352)<\/strong>, India played a key role in the <strong>UN Security Council<\/strong> and was made <strong>chair of the Neutral Nations Repatriation Commission<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>India has often acted as a <strong>bridge<\/strong> between opposing sides, including in its <strong>2021\u201322 UNSC stint<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>These examples show that India has historically taken <strong>bold and active roles<\/strong> in regional peace and security.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2><strong>Reasons for India<\/strong><strong>\u2019<\/strong><strong>s Political Reticence<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Economic Prioritization<\/strong>: Over the past two decades, under both <strong>UPA<\/strong> and <strong>NDA<\/strong> governments, India has focused on <strong>economic growth<\/strong>, becoming the <strong>world<\/strong><strong>\u2019<\/strong><strong>s 5th largest economy<\/strong>. Political involvement is seen as a risk to development.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Preserving Bilateral Ties<\/strong>: India avoids interfering in sensitive issues to maintain strong relations with diverse countries.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Leaving Conflicts to Regional Powers<\/strong>: In regions like <strong>West Asia<\/strong>, India follows the lead of <strong>Gulf countries<\/strong>, even though it has major interests there.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Global Order Dynamics<\/strong>: With increasing geopolitical shifts, India treads carefully to safeguard its standing and future ambitions.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Geopolitical Risks of Inaction<\/strong>: If India remains passive, others like <strong>T\u00fcrkiye, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar<\/strong> will step in\u2014even in areas crucial to India. For instance, India was <strong>excluded from Afghan talks<\/strong> and <strong>sidelined in Bangladesh<\/strong>, despite its proximity.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2><strong>Changing Global Expectations<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li>India\u2019s global ambitions\u2014<strong>UNSC permanent seat<\/strong>, being a leading democracy, and a <strong>pole in a multipolar world<\/strong>\u2014bring rising expectations.<\/li>\n<li>India\u2019s <strong>neutral stance<\/strong> in the Ukraine war influenced other developing nations to take a balanced position.<\/li>\n<li>PM Modi\u2019s message that <strong>\u201c<\/strong><strong>this is not an era of war\u201d<\/strong> and his call to avoid nuclear escalation were globally recognised.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Putin<\/strong><strong>\u2019<\/strong><strong>s praise<\/strong> is not just a thank you, but a <strong>subtle signal<\/strong> for India to take a larger role.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2><strong>Need for Strategic Shift and Internal Reform<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li>India must move from <strong>bilateral to regional strategies<\/strong>, especially in <strong>West Asia<\/strong>, <strong>Central Asia<\/strong>, and <strong>East Asia<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>It should re-engage with forums like the <strong>Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO)<\/strong> and revisit its <strong>RCEP decision<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Internal <strong>economic reforms<\/strong> are needed to meet <strong>U.S. trade expectations<\/strong> and build deeper global ties.<\/li>\n<li>India doesn\u2019t have to <strong>mediate<\/strong>, but must show its <strong>readiness to lead<\/strong> in peace and security.<\/li>\n<li>India\u2019s early leadership in the <strong>Korean War<\/strong>, despite its poverty, shows that proactive diplomacy is possible and respected.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Conclusion<\/strong><br \/>\nIndia should not view geopolitics and economic development as conflicting. A more active global role, without necessarily becoming a mediator, will enhance India\u2019s standing.
