Context<\/strong>: The Russia-Ukraine war exposed Europe\u2019s energy vulnerability, prompting a global rethink on energy security. Although Africa is geographically distant, the crisis affected it too. African countries are now exploring nuclear energy as a long-term solution to expand electricity access and strengthen their energy mix.<\/p>\n

Africa<\/strong>\u2019<\/strong>s Emerging Nuclear Energy Sector<\/strong><\/h2>\n

1. France<\/strong>\u2019<\/strong>s Decline<\/strong>: Once the dominant player, France<\/strong> is now losing its hold, especially in Francophone Africa<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. U.S. Initiatives<\/strong>: Since 2023<\/strong>, the US-Africa Nuclear Energy Summit (USANES)<\/strong> has been held. However, future progress depends on U.S. President Donald Trump<\/strong>\u2019<\/strong>s<\/strong> stance on nuclear expansion in Africa.<\/li>\n
  2. Russia<\/strong>\u2019<\/strong>s Slow Progress<\/strong>: Russia<\/strong> has signed nuclear agreements with Egypt, Mali, Burkina Faso, and Burundi<\/strong>. Its firm Rosatom<\/strong> is building a reactor in El Dabaa, Egypt<\/strong>, but progress is slow. Due to economic challenges and sanctions<\/strong>, Russia may struggle to fund projects in distant African countries, despite MoUs with pro-Russian governments.<\/li>\n
  3. South Korea<\/strong>\u2019<\/strong>s Entry<\/strong>: South Korea<\/strong>, through KHNP<\/strong>, has shown growing interest in investing in Africa\u2019s nuclear sector.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    China<\/strong>\u2019<\/strong>s Strategic Lead<\/strong><\/h2>\n

    1. China<\/strong> has become the leading player. Since 2012<\/strong>, it has trained African students through scholarships in partnership with the IAEA<\/strong> to promote its procedures and technologies.<\/p>\n

    1. Its state-owned giants \u2014 China General Nuclear Power Group (CGN)<\/strong> and China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC)<\/strong> \u2014 lead its efforts.<\/li>\n
    2. At the 2024 Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC)<\/strong>, Nigeria<\/strong> signed an MoU with China for complete cooperation in nuclear plant development and operation.<\/li>\n
    3. Uganda<\/strong> also signed an MoU to build a 2 GW<\/strong> plant, with the first 1 GW<\/strong> unit set to start by 2031<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
    4. Kenya<\/strong> plans to have a research reactor by 2030<\/strong>, while Ghana<\/strong> is working with U.S. and Chinese<\/strong> firms on SMRs<\/strong> and large reactors<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      Implications for India<\/strong><\/h2>\n

      1. India<\/strong> currently generates 8,180 MW<\/strong> of nuclear power and aims to reach 100 GW by 2047<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

      1. To achieve this, India must secure uranium supplies from Africa<\/strong>. It has signed a nuclear deal with Namibia<\/strong> and is exploring projects in Niger and Namibia<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
      2. However, China<\/strong>\u2019<\/strong>s dominance<\/strong> and stronger financial capacity may restrict India\u2019s access to African uranium and reduce its role in the continent\u2019s nuclear future, threatening India<\/strong>\u2019<\/strong>s long-term energy security<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
