African countries are now exploring nuclear energy as a long-term solution to expand electricity access and strengthen their energy mix.<\/p>\n<p>For detailed information on <strong>Status of Nuclear Energy in India<\/strong> read this article here<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Africa<\/strong><strong>\u2019<\/strong><strong>s Emerging Nuclear Energy Sector<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>1. <strong>France<\/strong><strong>\u2019<\/strong><strong>s Decline<\/strong>: Once the dominant player, <strong>France<\/strong> is now losing its hold, especially in <strong>Francophone Africa<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li><strong>U.S. Initiatives<\/strong>: Since <strong>2023<\/strong>, the <strong>US-Africa Nuclear Energy Summit (USANES)<\/strong> has been held. However, future progress depends on <strong>U.S. President Donald Trump<\/strong><strong>\u2019<\/strong><strong>s<\/strong> stance on nuclear expansion in Africa.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Russia<\/strong><strong>\u2019<\/strong><strong>s Slow Progress<\/strong>: <strong>Russia<\/strong> has signed nuclear agreements with <strong>Egypt, Mali, Burkina Faso, and Burundi<\/strong>. Its firm <strong>Rosatom<\/strong> is building a reactor in <strong>El Dabaa, Egypt<\/strong>, but progress is slow. Due to <strong>economic challenges and sanctions<\/strong>, Russia may struggle to fund projects in distant African countries, despite MoUs with pro-Russian governments.<\/li>\n<li><strong>South Korea<\/strong><strong>\u2019<\/strong><strong>s Entry<\/strong>: <strong>South Korea<\/strong>, through <strong>KHNP<\/strong>, has shown growing interest in investing in Africa\u2019s nuclear sector.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2><strong>China<\/strong><strong>\u2019<\/strong><strong>s Strategic Lead<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>1. <strong>China<\/strong> has become the leading player. Since <strong>2012<\/strong>, it has trained African students through scholarships in partnership with the <strong>IAEA<\/strong> to promote its procedures and technologies.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li>Its state-owned giants \u2014 <strong>China General Nuclear Power Group (CGN)<\/strong> and <strong>China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC)<\/strong> \u2014 lead its efforts.<\/li>\n<li>At the <strong>2024 Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC)<\/strong>, <strong>Nigeria<\/strong> signed an MoU with China for complete cooperation in nuclear plant development and operation.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Uganda<\/strong> also signed an MoU to build a <strong>2 GW<\/strong> plant, with the first <strong>1 GW<\/strong> unit set to start by <strong>2031<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Kenya<\/strong> plans to have a research reactor by <strong>2030<\/strong>, while <strong>Ghana<\/strong> is working with <strong>U.S. and Chinese<\/strong> firms on <strong>SMRs<\/strong> and <strong>large reactors<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2><strong>Implications for India<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>1. <strong>India<\/strong> currently generates <strong>8,180 MW<\/strong> of nuclear power and aims to reach <strong>100 GW by 2047<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li>To achieve this, India must secure <strong>uranium supplies from Africa<\/strong>.
