It\u2019s <\/span><b>Multi-Purpose Sensors for Surface and Subsurface Science (MUPUS) instrument<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> onboard was designed to measure <\/span><b>temperature by digging into the terrain<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. However, scientists <\/span><b>couldn\u2019t deploy it due to the awkward landing position<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>NASA\u2019s InSight robotic spacecraft<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> landed on <\/span><b>Mars<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in <\/span><b>2018<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It carried a temperature-sensing instrument called the <\/span><b>Heat Flow and Physical Properties Package (HP3).<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It consisted of a self-hammering nail, nicknamed \u201c<\/span><b>The Mole\u201d,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> designed <\/span><b>to penetrate 5 m below Mars\u2019s surface. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But could penetrate a depth of just 35 cm, unable to get any temperature data.<\/span><\/li>\n<li>While both the instruments (MUPUS and HP3) used a <strong>hammering device<\/strong>, the <strong>ChaSTE probe was pushed into the soil by a rotating device<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>News&#8211; Chandrayan&#8217;s ChaSTE becomes the first mission to successfully penetrate the soil of a celestial body (at Shiv Shakti landing site of Moon) to deploy a thermal probe.
