Undersea Cables and Their Importance<\/strong><\/h2>\n

  1. Undersea cables are the main link connecting the world<\/strong>\u2019<\/strong>s internet networks.<\/strong><\/li>\n
  2. These are fiber optic cables<\/strong> laid on the ocean floor, protected by thick padding to survive harsh sea conditions.<\/li>\n
  3. They carry about 90% of the world<\/strong>\u2019<\/strong>s data<\/strong>, 80% of global trade<\/strong>, and $10 trillion in financial transactions<\/strong>, according to Goldman Sachs<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
  4. There are around 600 undersea cables<\/strong> operating globally.<\/li>\n
  5. At each \u201clanding point<\/strong>,\u201d usually a manhole near the shore, these cables go inland to a \u201c<\/strong>landing station\u201d<\/strong> that connects them to major networks.<\/li>\n
  6. India\u2019s latest cable is Airtel<\/strong>\u2019<\/strong>s 2Africa Pearls system<\/strong>, with Meta<\/strong>\u2019<\/strong>s investment<\/strong>, adding 100 terabits per second<\/strong> of capacity.<\/li>\n
  7. Earlier in 2024<\/strong>, the SEA-ME-WE-6 cable<\/strong> also landed in Chennai and Mumbai<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    These cables are critical for internet access, trade, and secure communication.<\/strong><\/p>\n

    India<\/strong>\u2019<\/strong>s Current Cable Infrastructure<\/strong><\/h2>\n

    1. India connects globally through cable landing hubs mainly at Mumbai<\/strong> and Chennai<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
    2. Currently, 17 international cable systems<\/strong> land in India.<\/li>\n
    3. Two key domestic projects are the Chennai\u2013<\/strong>Andaman & Nicobar Islands (CANI)<\/strong> and the Kochi<\/strong>\u2013<\/strong>Lakshadweep Islands<\/strong> systems.<\/li>\n
    4. About 95% of India<\/strong>\u2019<\/strong>s subsea cable capacity enters through a 6-km stretch in Versova, Mumbai<\/strong>, increasing risk.<\/li>\n
    5. Despite this, India accounts for only 1% of global cable landing stations<\/strong> and 3% of subsea cable systems<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
    6. This shows the need for greater investment in infrastructure<\/strong> and diversified routes<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      Risks and Vulnerabilities<\/strong><\/h2>\n

      1. Overdependence on Versova<\/strong> makes India\u2019s network vulnerable to disruptions<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
      2. In contrast, Singapore<\/strong>, a much smaller country, has more cable landings<\/strong> than India.<\/li>\n
      3. A disruption in the Red Sea<\/strong> can impact 25% of India<\/strong>\u2019<\/strong>s internet traffic<\/strong>. This happened two years ago due to cable cuts caused by Houthi strikes<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
      4. India lacks domestic cable repair ships and storage depots<\/strong>, which delays emergency repair.<\/li>\n
      5. Laying cables in India requires 51 permissions<\/strong> from various departments like Home Ministry, Environment Ministry<\/strong>, and local bodies<\/strong>, causing long delays.<\/li>\n
      6. Fishing trawlers frequently damage cables near the coast<\/strong>, adding to the risk.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

        Steps to Improve India<\/strong>\u2019<\/strong>s Subsea Cable Infrastructure<\/strong><\/h2>\n

        1. Streamline permissions:<\/strong> Simplify the current 51-step approval process to speed up deployment.<\/li>\n
        2. Expand landing hubs:<\/strong> Reduce reliance on Versova by developing landing stations along other coastal areas.<\/li>\n
        3. Increase domestic repair capacity:<\/strong> Invest in Indian repair ships<\/strong> and cable storage facilities<\/strong> to reduce dependency on foreign help.<\/li>\n
        4. Protect coastal cables:<\/strong> Strengthen laws and practices to prevent damage from fishing trawlers<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
        5. Diversify cable routes:<\/strong> Avoid traditional trade routes to reduce risks and increase resilience.<\/li>\n
