This development has renewed focus on the importance of <strong>subsea cables<\/strong>, India\u2019s current infrastructure, associated risks, and needed reforms to strengthen digital connectivity.<\/p>\n<p>For detailed information on <strong>Submarine Cables and India- Threats and Vulnerabilities<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/submarine-cables-and-india-threats-and-vulnerabilities-explained-pointwise\/\">read this article here<\/a><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Undersea Cables and Their Importance<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li><strong> Undersea cables are the main link connecting the world<\/strong><strong>\u2019<\/strong><strong>s internet networks.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>These are <strong>fiber optic cables<\/strong> laid on the ocean floor, protected by thick padding to survive harsh sea conditions.<\/li>\n<li>They carry about <strong>90% of the world<\/strong><strong>\u2019<\/strong><strong>s data<\/strong>, <strong>80% of global trade<\/strong>, and <strong>$10 trillion in financial transactions<\/strong>, according to <strong>Goldman Sachs<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>There are around <strong>600 undersea cables<\/strong> operating globally.<\/li>\n<li>At each \u201c<strong>landing point<\/strong>,\u201d usually a manhole near the shore, these cables go inland to a <strong>\u201c<\/strong><strong>landing station\u201d<\/strong> that connects them to major networks.<\/li>\n<li>India\u2019s latest cable is <strong>Airtel<\/strong><strong>\u2019<\/strong><strong>s 2Africa Pearls system<\/strong>, with <strong>Meta<\/strong><strong>\u2019<\/strong><strong>s investment<\/strong>, adding <strong>100 terabits per second<\/strong> of capacity.<\/li>\n<li>Earlier in <strong>2024<\/strong>, the <strong>SEA-ME-WE-6 cable<\/strong> also landed in <strong>Chennai and Mumbai<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>These cables are <strong>critical for internet access, trade, and secure communication.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><strong>India<\/strong><strong>\u2019<\/strong><strong>s Current Cable Infrastructure<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li>India connects globally through cable landing hubs mainly at <strong>Mumbai<\/strong> and <strong>Chennai<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Currently, <strong>17 international cable systems<\/strong> land in India.<\/li>\n<li>Two key domestic projects are the <strong>Chennai\u2013<\/strong><strong>Andaman &amp; Nicobar Islands (CANI)<\/strong> and the <strong>Kochi<\/strong><strong>\u2013<\/strong><strong>Lakshadweep Islands<\/strong> systems.<\/li>\n<li>About <strong>95% of India<\/strong><strong>\u2019<\/strong><strong>s subsea cable capacity enters through a 6-km stretch in Versova, Mumbai<\/strong>, increasing risk.<\/li>\n<li>Despite this, India accounts for only <strong>1% of global cable landing stations<\/strong> and <strong>3% of subsea cable systems<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>This shows the need for <strong>greater investment in infrastructure<\/strong> and <strong>diversified routes<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2><strong>Risks and Vulnerabilities<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li>Overdependence on <strong>Versova<\/strong> makes India\u2019s network <strong>vulnerable to disruptions<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>In contrast, <strong>Singapore<\/strong>, a much smaller country, has <strong>more cable landings<\/strong> than India.<\/li>\n<li>A disruption in the <strong>Red Sea<\/strong> can impact <strong>25% of India<\/strong><strong>\u2019<\/strong><strong>s internet traffic<\/strong>.
