The\u00a0surface was very <strong>hot and hellish <\/strong>due to erupting volcanoes.<\/li>\n<li>With time, parts of the <strong>magma ocean<\/strong> started to <strong>cool<\/strong> down and the <strong>first pieces of the crust<\/strong> began to take shape.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Formation of plates:<\/strong> The <strong>thicker parts<\/strong> of the crust slowly formed the <strong>first continents<\/strong>, which <strong>moved like plates<\/strong> on the <strong>asthenospheric mantle<\/strong>, a layer going 400 km down.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Plate actions and their signatures:<\/strong> The plates soon began <strong>drifting into each other<\/strong> &#8211; sliding over or diving under each other, leaving unique <strong>chemical signatures in the crust<\/strong> over millennia.<\/li>\n<li>These chemical signatures have been most important in <strong>understanding the history of plate tectonics<\/strong> by studying them.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>The new study<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Now a new study has reported that the chemical signatures that scientists have associated with plate tectonics, actually existed in the Hadean protocrust, before the plates even began to subduct.
