Context<\/strong>: In March 2025, we marked five years of the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/strong> Countries across the world organised events and reflected on the crisis. Many global discussions took place. But a central question remains: Have we truly learnt from the pandemic?<\/strong> Have we built a world that is healthier, more inclusive, and innovative<\/strong>, especially in the Global South and North<\/strong>?<\/p>\n

Fragile Public Trust<\/strong><\/h2>\n

1. The pandemic revealed the fragility of public trust<\/strong> in healthcare systems.<\/p>\n

  1. Low confidence<\/strong> among people reduced the adoption of essential measures like testing and vaccines<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
  2. In India, underreporting of deaths<\/strong> in the early stages reflected this lack of trust.<\/li>\n
  3. In many countries, especially vulnerable economies, poor communication<\/strong> worsened the health crisis. Strong trust in institutions is essential<\/strong> for effective public health response.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Technology and the Digital Divide<\/strong><\/h2>\n

    1. There was a rapid increase in digital health technologies<\/strong>, such as telemedicine<\/strong> and AI in drug research<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

    1. A study using patent data from the University of Sussex<\/strong> showed a surge in AI-related pharmaceutical patents<\/strong> after the pandemic began. But many in the Global South lacked access<\/strong> to these tools.<\/li>\n

      Health System Weaknesses<\/strong><\/h2>\n

      1. COVID-19 exposed serious flaws in health systems<\/strong>, especially in developing countries.<\/p>\n

      3. Solutions like hybrid healthcare models<\/strong>\u2014combining digital tools with physical systems\u2014and public-private partnerships<\/strong> gained attention but were not sustained.<\/li>\n
      4. In decentralised systems, the role of a central public health coordinator<\/strong> became important to reduce coordination gaps.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

        Deepened Vulnerabilities<\/strong><\/h2>\n

        1. The pandemic intensified existing inequalities<\/strong>, especially for women<\/strong>, who faced more pressure in childcare, job losses, and mental health issues.<\/p>\n

        1. Marginalised groups<\/strong> struggled to access healthcare. Progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals<\/strong> was affected.<\/li>\n
        2. A global mental health crisis<\/strong> emerged. New remote work models<\/strong> brought challenges in productivity and well-being, with no long-term solutions found yet.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

          Equity and Global Access<\/strong><\/h2>\n

          1. COVID-19 highlighted global issues of equity and access<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

          1. Debates over intellectual property rights<\/strong> and vaccine distribution<\/strong> became intense.<\/li>\n
          2. Africa suffered delays<\/strong> due to vaccine nationalism<\/strong>, as rich nations prioritised their own needs.<\/li>\n
          3. The situation showed the need for stronger South-South cooperation<\/strong> to ensure fair access in future health emergencies.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

            Conclusion<\/strong><\/p>\n

            Some progress has been made in healthcare, innovation, and recovery<\/strong>, but major challenges remain. The goal of \u201c<\/strong>One World, One Health\u201d<\/strong> is still out of reach. The key question now is whether the world is truly learning and acting<\/strong> to build a resilient, inclusive global health system<\/strong> for the future.<\/p>\n
