{"id":33249,"date":"2018-10-30T11:31:54","date_gmt":"2018-10-30T06:01:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=33249"},"modified":"2018-10-30T11:31:54","modified_gmt":"2018-10-30T06:01:54","slug":"kalvari-submarine-a-big-step-in-defence-preparedness-pm","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/kalvari-submarine-a-big-step-in-defence-preparedness-pm\/","title":{"rendered":"Kalvari submarine a big step in defence preparedness: PM"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/news\/national\/kalvari-submarine-a-big-step-in-defence-preparedness-says-pm-modi\/article21665640.ece\">Kalvari submarine a big step in defence preparedness: PM<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Context<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Prime Minister Narendra Modi formally commissioned the first of six Scorpene diesel-electric submarines into the Navy on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p><strong>First of six scorpene-class diesel-electric vessels commissioned into the Navy<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>This is the Navy\u2019s first modern conventional submarine in almost two decades since the INS Sindhushastra was procured from Russia in July 2000.<\/li>\n<li>INS Kalvari is manned by a team of eight officers and 35 sailors<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>The Scorpene submarines<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Scorpene submarines can undertake different missions including anti-surface warfare, anti-submarine warfare, intelligence gathering, mine laying and area surveillance<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cKhanderi\u201d undergoing trials<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The second of the Scorpenes, Khanderi, was launched in January 2017, and is undergoing sea trials<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cKaranj\u201d will soon be ready<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The third, Karanj, is being readied for launch shortly.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Others in the pipeline too<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The rest are in various stages of outfitting. The project is expected to be over by 2020.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What is a Scorpene<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Scorpene is a conventional powered submarine weighing 1,500 tonnes and can go up to depths of 300m. It is built by DCNS of France.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The ongoing project<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In October 2005, India had signed a USD 3.75 bn deal for six of submarines to be built by Mazgaon Dock Limited (MDL) in Mumbai with transfer of technology.
