{"id":33291,"date":"2018-10-30T11:41:24","date_gmt":"2018-10-30T06:11:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=33291"},"modified":"2018-10-30T11:41:24","modified_gmt":"2018-10-30T06:11:24","slug":"centre-to-give-500-to-tb-patients-every-month","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/centre-to-give-500-to-tb-patients-every-month\/","title":{"rendered":"Centre\u00a0to\u00a0give\u00a0500\u00a0to\u00a0TB\u00a0patients\u00a0every\u00a0month:"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/sci-tech\/health\/centre-to-give-500-to-tb-patients-every-month\/article21527363.ece\"><strong>Centre\u00a0to\u00a0give\u00a0500<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>to<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>TB<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>patients<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>every<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>month<\/strong><\/a><strong>: <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Context<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>About 35 lakh identified tuberculosis patients across the country will soon get 500 every month from the Centre as social support.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Earlier Proposal<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Earlier proposal was to provide this cash benefit only to tribal and BPL patients, all the 35 lakh identified patients would be covered now<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The cash benefit for social support that will cover loss of wages, travel and mainly nutrition<\/p>\n<p><strong>Guidance document<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It pointed out that under-nutrition is an established risk factor for progression of latent TB infection to active TB.<\/li>\n<li>According to the guidance document, under-nutrition is a serious co-morbidity in patients with active TB in India, and increases the risk of severe disease, death, drug toxicity, drug mal-absorption and relapse after cure.<\/li>\n<li>Nutritional assessment, counselling and support are now considered integral aspects of care of TB patient<\/li>\n<li>Therefore these elements need to be integrated into the overall management of patients with active TB in India<\/li>\n<li>TB is inextricably linked to determinants of health such as malnutrition and low immunity due to social deprivation and marginalisation. Poor nutrition is increasing the risk by three-fold.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Take-home ration<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The state governments should take it upon themselves and provide this. Rather than processed food, take home rations will be better.<\/p>\n<p>Some states like Kerala and Tamil Nadu are already doing this<\/p>\n<p><strong>Early Detection<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This will also help in early case detection and treatment compliance.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What the guidance document has<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Guidelines on nutritional assessment, counselling and support<\/li>\n<li>A simplified field chart for doctors and health workers to make patient-specific assessment of required nutrition<\/li>\n<li>Recommendation that patients should also be screened for anaemia<\/li>\n<li>Recommends extra care for management of severely undernourished patients<\/li>\n<li>Severely undernourished patients should be hospitalised<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Why is nutrition important?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Weights in TB patients are among the lowest in the world<\/li>\n<li>50% of adult men weigh below 43 kg<\/li>\n<li>50% of adult women weigh below 38 kg<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Centre\u00a0to\u00a0give\u00a0500\u00a0to\u00a0TB\u00a0patients\u00a0every\u00a0month: Context About 35 lakh identified tuberculosis patients across the country will soon get 500 every month from the Centre as social support.
