While the mainstreaming of feminist discourse is a <strong>historic milestone<\/strong>, it has also created new <strong>challenges<\/strong>. The article reflects on the <strong>limitations of current feminist narratives<\/strong> and calls for a more <strong>compassionate, inclusive, and context-sensitive feminism<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Two Terrains of Women<\/strong><strong>\u2019<\/strong><strong>s Issues<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Women\u2019s concerns exist in <strong>two overlapping spaces<\/strong>: <strong>structural<\/strong> and <strong>interpersonal<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong> Structural issues<\/strong> include <strong>societal norms and institutional designs<\/strong> that keep women at the margins.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Interpersonal issues<\/strong> involve <strong>family dynamics and personal relationships<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Applying a structural lens too rigidly to personal spaces can <strong>oversimplify relationships<\/strong> that are shaped by <strong>care, duty, and mutual negotiation<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>Why Current Feminist Narratives Need Rethinking<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li><strong> Risk of Oversimplifying Personal Dynamics<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Applying structural feminism too rigidly can distort personal relationships. <\/strong>Feminist discourse often views small personal conflicts as power struggles. But many Indian men quietly work in tough environments out of love and responsibility for their families. For example, a husband may expect dinner at home but gives his full salary to his wife. Labeling such actions as oppression can misrepresent reality and alienate supportive men from the conversation.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li><strong> Problems in Merging Diverse Gender Inequities<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Treating all women<\/strong><strong>\u2019<\/strong><strong>s experiences as one hides important differences. <\/strong>The struggles of an urban woman balancing home and work are not the same as a village woman fearing rape while accessing a toilet. Feminist narratives often merge such realities into a single story, masking deeper inequities. This makes policy solutions less effective. Also, men facing emotional or economic stress \u2014 like humiliation at work \u2014 may feel ignored. While they are not against feminism, excluding their realities creates defensiveness. A more inclusive feminism should recognise all forms of suffering.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>What Kind of Feminism is Needed Today?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Inclusive Feminism<\/strong>: Acknowledges <strong>different challenges<\/strong> faced by <strong>urban and rural women<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Compassionate Feminism<\/strong>: Recognizes <strong>emotional and financial pressures on men<\/strong>, encouraging <strong>solidarity<\/strong>. <strong><em>Example<\/em>: Men who support families silently, driven by care.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong> Complexity-Embracing Feminism<\/strong>: Understands that <strong>not all relationships reflect oppression<\/strong>; many involve <strong>negotiation and care<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Non-Antagonistic Approach<\/strong>: Aims to <strong>build support, not resistance<\/strong>, by promoting <strong>shared responsibility<\/strong> and <strong>context-sensitive solutions<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Question for practice:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Examine<\/strong> how current feminist narratives in India may risk oversimplifying personal dynamics and masking diverse gender inequities.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Source: The post Feminism must be inclusive compassionate and context-sensitive has been created, based on the article \u201cFeminism for polarised times\u201d published in \u201cThe Hindu\u201d on 15 April 2025.
