This change challenges <strong>China<\/strong><strong>\u2019<\/strong><strong>s counter-terror goals<\/strong> and weakens its <strong>diplomatic influence in West Asia<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>China<\/strong><strong>\u2019<\/strong><strong>s Recent Diplomatic Gains in the Arab World<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li>China has shown <strong>consistent support for Arab positions on Gaza<\/strong>, including by <strong>hosting Hamas<\/strong> and other Palestinian groups in Beijing.<\/li>\n<li>These moves have improved China\u2019s <strong>standing in Arab public opinion<\/strong>, with surveys indicating <strong>greater popularity than the U.S.<\/strong> in the region.<\/li>\n<li>China&#8217;s support has boosted its <strong>geopolitical influence<\/strong> and allowed it to project itself as a <strong>key diplomatic player<\/strong> in the Middle East.<\/li>\n<li>Direct engagement with Palestinian causes has helped China <strong>counterbalance Western influence<\/strong>, especially that of the U.S.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2><strong>Rise of Uyghur Militants in <\/strong><strong>\u2018<\/strong><strong>New<\/strong><strong>\u2019 <\/strong><strong>Syria<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Uyghur fighters<\/strong> from the <strong>East Turkistan Islamic Movement (ETIM)<\/strong>, also called the <strong>Turkistan Islamic Party (TIP)<\/strong>, now hold <strong>formal ranks in Syria<\/strong><strong>\u2019<\/strong><strong>s military<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>This happened after <strong>Ahmed al-Sharaa<\/strong> (formerly <strong>Abu Mohammed al-Jolani<\/strong>) and his group <strong>Hay<\/strong><strong>\u2019<\/strong><strong>at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS)<\/strong> took over <strong>Damascus without resistance<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>These militants had strong ties with <strong>IS and al-Qaeda<\/strong>, and were featured in propaganda targeting <strong>Assad<\/strong><strong>\u2019<\/strong><strong>s regime and China<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>In 2025, <strong>about 2,000 Uyghur fighters<\/strong> are reported to be active in Syria.<\/li>\n<li>Notably, <strong>Abdulaziz Dawood Khodaberdi (Zahid)<\/strong>, a former ETIM commander, is now a <strong>senior military officer<\/strong>in Syria.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2><strong>Beijing<\/strong><strong>\u2019<\/strong><strong>s Strategic Concerns and Historical Context<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li>China has long used the <strong>global war on terror narrative<\/strong> to <strong>target Uyghur militancy<\/strong>, especially in <strong>Xinjiang<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>In <strong>2002<\/strong>, the U.S. labeled <strong>ETIM a terrorist group<\/strong>, aligning with China&#8217;s position.<\/li>\n<li>But in <strong>2020<\/strong>, the U.S. <strong>delisted ETIM<\/strong>, claiming no credible evidence of its activity existed.<\/li>\n<li>China worked with the <strong>Taliban in Afghanistan<\/strong> to <strong>relocate Uyghur fighters<\/strong> away from its border in <strong>Badakhshan<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>In contrast, Syria\u2019s new regime has <strong>promoted Uyghurs<\/strong>, creating a <strong>diplomatic rupture<\/strong> for China.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2><strong>Western and Regional Powers Reshape Syria<\/strong><strong>\u2019<\/strong><strong>s Future<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Western countries and regional allies<\/strong> are engaging with Al Sharaa to <strong>stabilize Syria<\/strong> and <strong>prevent refugee flows<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>These moves aim to <strong>limit the influence of China, Russia, and Iran<\/strong> in Syria.<\/li>\n<li>Many <strong>former terrorists<\/strong> are now taking on <strong>official political roles<\/strong>, complicating the global security framework.<\/li>\n<li>China\u2019s <strong>relations with Israel<\/strong> have worsened due to its <strong>stance on Gaza<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Meanwhile, <strong>Saudi Arabia and the UAE<\/strong> have accepted Al Sharaa\u2019s regime and <strong>reduced criticism of China<\/strong><strong>\u2019<\/strong><strong>s Xinjiang policy<\/strong>, leaving Beijing <strong>diplomatically isolated<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Conclusion<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The <strong>elevation of Uyghur militants<\/strong> into Syria\u2019s formal military is a <strong>major security and diplomatic setback<\/strong> for China.
