{"id":33321,"date":"2018-10-30T11:49:35","date_gmt":"2018-10-30T06:19:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=33321"},"modified":"2018-10-30T11:49:35","modified_gmt":"2018-10-30T06:19:35","slug":"in-an-elite-club-on-indias-wassenaar-entry","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/in-an-elite-club-on-indias-wassenaar-entry\/","title":{"rendered":"In an elite club: On India\u2019s Wassenaar entry"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/opinion\/editorial\/in-an-elite-club\/article21419773.ece\"><strong>In an elite club: On India\u2019s Wassenaar entry<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Context<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>India\u2019s admittance into the Wassenaar Arrangement, a multilateral export control regime, as its 42nd participating member is a big step forward in its quest for formal acceptance as a responsible nuclear power.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fact<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This has come a year after India made the request for membership<\/p>\n<p><strong>Wassenaar Agreement<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The Wassenaar Arrangement was founded in 1996, and is clubbed with mechanisms such as the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG), the Missile Technology Control Regime (MTCR) and the Australia Group<\/li>\n<li><strong>Aim<\/strong>: Its stated aim is \u201cto contribute to regional and international security and stability, by promoting transparency and greater responsibility in transfers of conventional arms and dual-use goods and technologies, thus preventing destabilising accumulations.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>A lesson in quiet Diplomacy<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Wassenaar Arrangement membership is also a lesson on the need for quiet diplomacy in sensitive nuclear issues, compared to the botched attempt to gain entry to the NSG last year<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fresh Momentum for NSG membership<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Now that more and more countries are signing on to India\u2019s steadily strengthening credentials in the nuclear area, there is hope that a fresh momentum will be imparted to a future bid for the NSG.
