Instability in West Asia, which it will fuel, is bad news for India<\/p>\n<p><strong>A bad decision<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Trump has eliminated all prospects of an Israel-Palestine deal by recognising Jerusalem as Israel\u2019s capital<\/li>\n<li><strong>No conditions<\/strong>: The decision is not conditioned on Israel stopping its programme of building settlements in occupied land. It does not call on Tel Aviv to take steps towards recognising the Palestinian state. Israel has not even been obligated to protect the rights of the approximately 100000 Palestinian residents of East Jerusalem who live beyond the city\u2019s so-called \u201cseparation barrier\u201d, cut off from city services<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Anti-Muslim rhetoric<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>How does one make sense of this bizarre action?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Inexperienced core team<\/strong>: Trump\u2019s core Israel-Palestine team \u2014 Jason Greenblatt, David Friedman and son-in-law Jared Kushner \u2014 is remarkable for its lack of experience on West Asia<\/li>\n<li>Israel supporter and tycoon Sheldon Adelson, a darling of the United States far-right, has been amongst Trump\u2019s biggest campaign donors<\/li>\n<li><strong>Pandering to Israel\u2019s policies<\/strong>: Facing heat from many United States Jews for his failure to condemn neo-Nazis, Trump may well see pandering to Israel\u2019s policies as a way of winning their support<\/li>\n<li>In addition, the Christian right-wing sees freeing Jerusalem of Muslims as a religious imperative<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Both sides suffer<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Palestinians suffer under occupation; Israel, in turn, faces a volatile region and global isolation<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Unsustainable occupation<\/strong>: In the long term, moreover, Israel\u2019s occupation is unsustainable; no nation-state can indefinitely maintain second-class status for half of those living in territories it rules<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Pragmatic stand by India<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>New Delhi\u2019s decision to avoid following the United States\u2019 lead reflects well on Prime Minister\u00a0diplomatic team: Instability in West Asia, which Trump\u2019s action will fuel, is bad news for India.
