{"id":334093,"date":"2025-04-24T16:05:03","date_gmt":"2025-04-24T10:35:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/?p=334093"},"modified":"2025-04-25T18:13:27","modified_gmt":"2025-04-25T12:43:27","slug":"greenhouse-gas-emission-intensity-gei-targets-rules-2025","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/greenhouse-gas-emission-intensity-gei-targets-rules-2025\/","title":{"rendered":"Greenhouse Gas Emission Intensity (GEI) Targets Rules, 2025"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>News: <\/strong>Union Environment Ministry notifies <strong>draft Greenhouse Gases Emission Intensity (GEI)<\/strong> Target Rules, 2025, taking a bold step towards sustainability. <strong>Greenhouse Gas Emission Intensity (GEI) Targets Rules, 2025.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-334365 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Greenhouse-Gas-Emission-Intensity-GEI-Targets-Rules-2025.png?resize=457%2C303&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Greenhouse Gas Emission Intensity (GEI) Targets Rules, 2025\" width=\"457\" height=\"303\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Greenhouse-Gas-Emission-Intensity-GEI-Targets-Rules-2025.png?resize=300%2C199&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Greenhouse-Gas-Emission-Intensity-GEI-Targets-Rules-2025.png?resize=1024%2C680&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Greenhouse-Gas-Emission-Intensity-GEI-Targets-Rules-2025.png?resize=768%2C510&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Greenhouse-Gas-Emission-Intensity-GEI-Targets-Rules-2025.png?w=1280&amp;ssl=1 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 457px) 100vw, 457px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>About Greenhouse Gas Emission Intensity (GEI) Targets Rules, 2025<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>The Rules will establish <strong>India\u2019s first compliance-based domestic carbon market<\/strong> which <strong>aims<\/strong> to drive industrial adoption of <strong>low-carbon technologies<\/strong> and drive India\u2019s <strong>commitment<\/strong>s to its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Nodal Ministry:<\/strong> Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC)<\/li>\n<li>This market will be structured under the <strong>Carbon Credit Trading Scheme (CCTS), 2023.<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>It is a <strong>regulatory framework<\/strong> for <strong>carbon credit trading<\/strong> and to facilitate emission reductions in line with India&#8217;s commitments under international climate agreements.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Sectors covered:<\/strong> The Targets will apply to <strong>4 high-emission sector &#8211;<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>aluminium, cement, chlor-alkali, and pulp and paper. <\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>The obligated entities need to account for<strong> Carbon Dioxide (CO2) <\/strong>and<strong> Perflurocarbons (PFCs) <\/strong>such as CF4, C2F6, C4F10, and C6F14.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Compliance mechanism and obligations:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>The targets comprise <strong>two compliance periods, 2025-26 and 2026-27<\/strong>, aimed at enabling year-wise sectoral decarbonisation.<\/li>\n<li>A <strong>uniform formula<\/strong> has been proposed to <strong>calculate and verify emissions<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The targets can be achieved by <strong>either reducing emissions<\/strong> or by <strong>purchasing carbon credits certificates<\/strong> from the Indian carbon market.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Compliance benefit:<\/strong> Obligated entities keeping <strong>emissions below the targets<\/strong> will be issued <strong>carbon credits<\/strong>. These can be either banked until the next compliance cycle, or sold to underperforming firms.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Non-compliance obligation:<\/strong> Obligated entities that <strong>underperform and fail to submit<\/strong> carbon credits equivalent to the shortfall for compliance, will be <strong>charged twice the average traded carbon price <\/strong>for the related compliance cycle.<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>price<\/strong> will be calculated by the <strong>Bureau of Energy Efficiency<\/strong> <strong>(Ministry of Power) and <\/strong>the <strong>compensation<\/strong> will be collected by the<strong> Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB).<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>News: Union Environment Ministry notifies draft Greenhouse Gases Emission Intensity (GEI) Target Rules, 2025, taking a bold step towards sustainability.
