History<\/strong><\/td>\n1)<\/strong> The Government of India instituted two civilian awards-Bharat Ratna & Padma Vibhushan in 1954.
\n2)<\/strong> Padma Vibhushan had three classes namely Pahela Varg, Dusra Varg and Tisra Varg.
\n3)<\/strong> These were subsequently renamed as Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri vide Presidential Notification issued on January 8, 1955.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
About<\/strong><\/td>\n1)<\/strong> The Padma Awards are one of the highest<\/strong> civilian honours of India.
\n2)<\/strong> They are announced annually on the eve of Republic Day.
\n3)<\/strong> These Awards are conferred by the President<\/strong> of India at ceremonial functions which are held at Rashtrapati Bhawan usually around March \/ April every year.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Ministry<\/strong><\/td>\nThe awards come under the aegis of the Ministry of Home Affairs.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Objective<\/strong><\/td>\nTo acknowledge achievements in all fields of activities or discipline where element of public service<\/strong> is involved.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Categories<\/strong><\/td>\nThe Awards are given in three categories:
\n1)<\/strong> Padma Vibhushan (for exceptional and distinguished service),
\n2)<\/strong> Padma Bhushan (distinguished service of higher-order) and
\n3)<\/strong> Padma Shri (distinguished service).
\nPadma Vibhushan is highest in the hierarchy of Padma Awards followed by Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Discipline<\/strong><\/td>\nThe Awards are given in various disciplines\/ fields of activities, viz.- art, social work, public affairs, science and engineering, trade and industry, medicine, literature and education, sports, music etc.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Eligibility<\/strong><\/td>\nAll persons without distinction<\/strong> of race, occupation, position or sex are eligible for these Awards.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Selection process<\/strong><\/td>\n1)<\/strong> All nominations received for the Padma Awards are placed before the Padma Awards Committee<\/span> constituted by the Prime Minister<\/span> every year.
\n2)<\/strong> The Padma Awards Committee is headed by the Cabinet Secretary<\/span> and includes the Home Secretary, the Secretary to the President, and four to six eminent persons as members.
\n3)<\/strong> The recommendations of the committee are submitted to the Prime Minister and the President of India for approval.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Some important facts<\/strong><\/td>\n1)<\/strong> The total number of awards to be given in a year (excluding posthumous awards and to NRI\/foreigners\/OCIs) should not be more than 120.
\n2)<\/strong> The award does not amount to title and cannot be used as a suffix or prefix to the awardees\u2019 name.
\n3)<\/strong> These were discontinued in 1978 and 1979 and from 1993 to 1997.
