Indian Agricultural Research Institute (<strong>IARI<\/strong>), New Delhi and the <strong>Indian Rice Research Institute<\/strong> (<strong>IRRI<\/strong>), Hyderabad<\/li>\n<li>They are <strong>world\u2019s first genome-edited rice varieties<\/strong>, named as &#8211; <strong>DRR Rice 100 (Kamla)<\/strong> and <strong>Pusa DST Rice 1.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>About DRR Dhan 100 Kamala<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It was developed by <strong>ICAR-IIRR, Hyderabad<\/strong>, based on <strong>Samba Mahsuri (BPT 5204).<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Objective:<\/strong> Its objective is to <strong>increase the number of grains per panicle <\/strong>(450 to 500 more grains) and it matures <strong>20 days earlier (~130 days).<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>The yield is <strong>almost 25% more<\/strong>, which is about <strong>eight tonnes more per hectare<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Due to its <strong>shorter duration<\/strong>, it helps <strong>save water and fertilizers<\/strong> and <strong>reduces methane<\/strong> gas emissions.<\/li>\n<li>Its <strong>stalk is strong<\/strong> and does <strong>not fall<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The rice <strong>quality is similar<\/strong> to the original variety, <strong>Samba Mahsuri<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>About Pusa DST Rice 1<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It was developed from <strong>MTU1010<\/strong> and is a \u2018<strong>salinity tension tolerant\u2019<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>When cultivated under areas that have <strong>national average of salinity<\/strong>, the new variety produced <strong>66% additional yield than MTU1010<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Similarly, in <strong>alkaline conditions<\/strong>, the new variety gave <strong>66% more yield<\/strong> than its original and under \u2018<strong>salinity tension\u2019<\/strong> conditions; the yield of the new variety <strong>was 30.36%.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Technique involved<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>These new varieties were developed using <strong>genome-editing technology<\/strong> based on <strong>CRISPR-Cas<\/strong>, which makes <strong>precise changes<\/strong> in the organism&#8217;s genetic material <strong>without adding foreign DNA<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Not a GM Crop<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Current genome technology involves <strong>using living organisms from native crop species <\/strong>(known as SDN 1 and SDN2 types of genome editing) to enhance productivity and achieve desired results, <strong>rather than incorporating alien organisms<\/strong> or <strong>bacteria<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The two new varieties <strong>incorporate no foreign DNA<\/strong>, so they are <strong>not<\/strong> genetically modified (GM).<\/li>\n<li>Hence, these varieties are <strong>exempt from the biosafety regulations<\/strong> outlined in Rules 7-11 of the <strong>1989 Environment (Protection) Act.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Background<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>National Agricultural Science Fund:<\/strong> In 2018, ICAR initiated <strong>genome-editing research<\/strong> to improve <strong>two<\/strong> major rice varieties \u2013 Samba Mahsuri and MTU 1010 \u2013 under the <strong>National Agricultural Science Fund. <\/strong><\/li>\n<li>In the <strong>2023-24 budget<\/strong>, the Government of India allocated \u20b9<strong>500 crores<\/strong> for genome editing in agricultural crops.<\/li>\n<li>ICAR has initiated <strong>mega genome editing projects<\/strong> for <strong>horticulture crops, animals, fish, and microbes.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>News: Union Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister has announced the development of two genome-edited rice varieties, marking a new beginning in the field of scientific research and innovation.
