As per the mutual understanding of India and Bhutan, both the nations consider this area as a Bhutanese territory. The project includes a China-Pakistan economic development programme aimed at absorbing as much as $46 billion in investment, most of it from Chinese banks<\/li>\n<li>China also has complained bitterly for decades over India\u2019s accepting the Dalai Lama as a refugee in 1959. The Tibetan Buddhist spiritual leader has kept his headquarters in northern India since fleeing Chinese-ruled Tibet.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Here is a timeline of events chronicling how the situation unfolded:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>June 16<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; The Indian Army intercepts and stalls road-laying efforts by the Chinese in the\u00a0Doka\u00a0La area of the Doklam plateau, leading to a standoff between units of the Indian Army and the People\u2019s Liberation Army of China. There is dispute over the plateau, which is just north of the tri-junction of Sikkim, Bhutan, and Tibet<\/p>\n<p><strong>June 20<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; The Bhutanese envoy in New Delhi\u00a0registers protest against Chinese intervention into its territory<\/p>\n<p><strong>June 23\u00a0<\/strong>&#8211;\u00a0China refuses entry to pilgrims visiting Kailash Mansarovar \u2014 a site considered holy by Hindus, Buddhists and Jains \u2014 citing damage to roads due to rains in Tibet<\/p>\n<p><strong>June 28\u00a0<\/strong>&#8211; The Chief of the Army Staff, BipinRawat, visits Sikkim to take stock of the situation<\/p>\n<p><strong>June 29\u00a0<\/strong>&#8211; China tests a 35-tonne military tank in Tibet, near the Indian border<\/p>\n<p><strong>July 6\u00a0<\/strong>&#8211; China calls off a meeting between Premier Xi Jinping and Narendra Modi on the sidelines of the G20 meet, saying the &#8220;atmosphere was not right.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>July 18<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; Chinese foreign ministry asks India to immediately withdraw its troops to avoid any escalation of the situation. India should not use \u201ctrespass\u201d into the Doklam area in the Sikkim sector as a \u201cpolicy tool\u201d to achieve its \u201cpolitical targets\u201d, said Chinese officials<\/p>\n<p><strong>July 22<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; India and China should engage in direct dialogue free of any \u201ccoercive aspects\u201d to reduce the tension over a military standoff in Doklam, the Pentagon says<\/p>\n<p><strong>July 27<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; The Air Force station at Panagarh in Bardhaman district gets its first set of multi-skilled transport aircraft C-130J Super Hercules manufactured by Lockheed Martin of the United States. Officials say the deployment at the strategically important air base has nothing to do with the Doklam standoff. National Security Adviser AjitDoval holds talks with Chinese State Councillor Yang Jichei, covering \u201cbilateral issues and major problems.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>July 31<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; Chinese border guards enter one kilometre into Indian territory and threaten shepherds grazing cattle in the Barahoti area of Uttarakhand\u2019sChamoli district.<\/p>\n<p><strong>August 3<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; India must withdraw its troops on the Doklam plateau or face &#8221;serious consequences&#8221;, says a senior Chinese diplomat in New Delhi. External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj tells\u00a0 the Rajya Sabha that \u201cwar was not a solution,\u201d referring to the stand-off with the Chinese People\u2019s Liberation Army at Doklam, adding that \u201cwisdom was to resolve issues diplomatically.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>August 4<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; China says it has shown \u201cutmost goodwill\u201d over the prolonged military standoff with India in the Sikkim sector but warned that its \u201crestraint\u201d has a \u201cbottom line\u201c.<\/p>\n<p><strong>August 9<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; Defence Minister ArunJaitley tells the Rajya Sabha that the armed forces were strong enough to meet any challenge to the country\u2019s security, underlining that lessons had been learnt from the 1962 war. Tibetan spiritual leader Dalai Lama describes India and China as close neighbours but cautioned against \u201charsh words.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>August 17<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; State-run media house Xinhua releases a video in English, entitled \u201cThe Seven Sins of India\u201d, which accuses India of \u201ctrampling international law\u201d and \u201cconfusing right and wrong\u201d over the Doklam crisis.\u00a0A video\u00a0surfaces\u00a0of the August 15 skirmish between Indian and Chinese troops by the Pangonglake in Ladakh. However, shots were not fired, and the brawl was restricted to\u00a0fisticuffs and stone-throwing<\/p>\n<p><strong>August 18<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; Japanese Ambassador to India Kenji Hiramatsu makes comments supporting India\u2019s position on Doklam. Japan and China are locked in a stalemate over eight uninhabited\u00a0islands in the\u00a0East China Sea. China is also involved in territorial\u00a0disputes with the Philippines and Vietnam in the South China Sea<\/p>\n<p><strong>August 25<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; China agrees to tackle trade imbalance.
