{"id":33646,"date":"2018-10-30T13:26:54","date_gmt":"2018-10-30T07:56:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=33646"},"modified":"2018-10-30T13:26:54","modified_gmt":"2018-10-30T07:56:54","slug":"india-loses-billions-to-air-pollution-un","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/india-loses-billions-to-air-pollution-un\/","title":{"rendered":"India loses billions to air pollution: UN\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/news\/national\/india-loses-billions-to-air-pollution-says-united-nations\/article21039419.ece\"><strong>India loses billions to air pollution: UN<\/strong><\/a><strong><u>\u00a0<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Context <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Article talks about the latest UNEP report titled \u2018Towards a pollution-free planet<\/p>\n<p><strong>Observations<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Highest share of India in South &amp; SE Asia<\/strong>: India had the highest share of welfare costs (or a loss of income from labour), of about $220 billion (about \u20b91.4 trillion), in South and South-East Asia \u2014 of a combined total of $380 billion from mortality due to air pollution<\/li>\n<li><strong>Global mortality costsprojection<\/strong>: The global mortality costs from outdoor\u00a0air pollution\u00a0are projected to rise to about $25 trillion by 2060 in the absence of more stringent measures<\/li>\n<li><strong>Highest share of China at regional &amp; national scale<\/strong>: At regional and national scale, China\u2019s welfare costs from mortality were the highest at nearly $1 trillion followed by the Organisation for Economic Corporation and Development (OECD) countries with a combined total of $730 billion, the report added quoting a 2016 projection by the OECD<\/li>\n<li><strong>Large number of Premature deaths<\/strong>: Approximately 19 million premature deaths are estimated to occur annually as a result of the way societies use natural resources and impact the environment to support production and consumption<\/li>\n<li>If consumption and production patterns continue as they are, it will seriously burden an already-polluted planet, affecting current and future generations<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>UNEP\u2019s solution<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>UNEP called for strong high-level political commitment and engagement of the local government, civil society and other stakeholders. Report stated that,<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The responsibility is on governments, businesses, cities and local authorities, civil society and individuals around the world to commit to act to beat pollution in all its forms<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>What should be done to achieve a high level of political commitment?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>To achieve high level political commitment in key economic sectors, there is a need to go beyond the environmental ministries and include other relevant ministries such as finance, agriculture, industry, urban, transport, energy and health<\/p>\n<p><strong>Towards a pollution free planet<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Report was launched during the first Conference of Parties for the Minamata Convention, which addresses mercury issues, and ahead of the annual U.N.
