About Designating Senior Advocates<\/h2>\n

  1. Under <\/span>Section 16 of the <\/b>Advocates Act, 1961<\/i><\/b>, the Supreme Court and High Courts have the authority to confer the designation of senior advocate based on merit and legal standing.<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. Before <\/span>2017<\/b>, each High Court followed its own inconsistent procedures.<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. In <\/span>2017<\/b>, the Supreme Court, acting on a PIL by Senior Advocate Indira Jaising, introduced a uniform, points-based system with a Permanent Committee.<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. In <\/span>2023<\/b>, the Court adjusted the marking system to improve the framework.<\/span><\/li>\n
  5. In <\/span>May 2025<\/b>, the Supreme Court ruled the points system unworkable and issued new guidelines based on collective decision-making by the Full Court.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
