Abu (1158 m<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">etres), a small hilly block, is separated from the main range by the valley of the Banas.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The <\/span><b>Guru Sikhar (1722 metres<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">), the highest peak, is situated in Mt. Abu.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Important Passes:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Barr, Pipli Ghat, Dewair and Desuri passes allow movement by roads and railways.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>The Vindhyan Range<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It runs parallel to the Narmada Valley in an east-west direction from Jobat in Gujarat to Sasaram in Bihar for a distance of over 1200 km.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Vindhyas are continued eastwards as the Bharner and the Kaimur hills.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Rivers like Chambal, Betwa and Ken rise within 30 km of the Narmada.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>The Satpura Range<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Runs in east-west direction south of the Vindhyas and in between the Narmada and the Tapi, roughly parallel to these rivers.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Expanse: It commences from the Rajpipla Hills in the west, through the Mahadev Hills to the Maikala Range<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Dhupgarh (1350 metres) near Panchmari on Mahadev Hills is the highest peak.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The other peaks are the AstambaDongar (1325 metres) and Amarkantak (1127 metres).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><a id=\"h14\"><\/a>THE WESTERN GHATS OR SAHAYADRIS<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">They run in a north-south direction, parallel and close to the Arabian Sea coast, from the Tapi valley (21 degree N) to a little north of Kanyakumari (11 degree N latitude) for a distance of 1600 km.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">These Ghats traverse the States of <\/span><b>Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Goa, Maharashtra and Gujarat.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>THE NORTHERN SECTION<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Spread<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">: From 21 degree N to 16 degree N from Tapi valley to a little north of Goa.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Peaks<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">: Kalasubai (1646 metres) near Igatpuri, Salher (1567 metres) about 90 km north of Nashik.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Important passes:\u00a0<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Thalghat<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">: It connects Nashik with Mumbai<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Bhorghat<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">:\u00a0 It connects Mumbai with Pune<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>THE MIDDLE SAHAYADRI<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ul>\n<li><b>Spread<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">: They run from 16 degree N latitude upto Nilgiri Hills.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Important peaks<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">: Vavul Mala (2339 metres), Kudremukh (1892 metre) and Pashpagiri (1714 metres)<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Doda Betta (2637 metres) and Makurti (2554 metres)<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>THE SOUTHERN SAHAYADRI<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This part is separated from the main Sahayadris by a pass known as the <\/span><b>Palghat Gap<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (with elevation of 75-300 metres).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Highest peak<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> \u2013 Anai Mudi (2695 metres)\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Ranges<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">: Anaimalai (1800-2000 metres) to the north, the Palani (900-1200 metres) to the north-east and the Cardamom Hills or the Ealaimalai to the south.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><a id=\"h15\"><\/a>THE EASTERN GHATS<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It is a chain of highly broken and detached hills starting from the <\/span><b>Mahanadi in Odisha to the Vagai in Tamil Nadu.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It comprises the <\/span><b>Maliya and the Madugula Konda ranges.<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">T<\/span><b>he Maliya Range<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">: The peaks and ridges of the Maliya range have a general elevation of 900-1200 metres and the <\/span><b>Mahendra Giri<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (1501 metres) is the tallest peak here.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">T<\/span><b>he Madugula Konda Range:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> It has the higher elevations ranging from 1100 metres and 1400 metres with several peaks exceeding 1600 metres. <\/span><b>Example <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u2013 Arma Konda (1680 metres), Gali Konda (1643 metres) and Sinkram Gutta (1620 metres)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The southern part of this range is called the<\/span><b> Palkonda Range.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Very low elevation plateaus and hills lie in further south, except for the <\/span><b>Javadi Hills and Shevroy-Kalrayan Hills (both &gt; 1000 metres).<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Biligiri Rangan Hills in Coimbatore<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> district attained 1279 metres.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><a id=\"h16\"><\/a>Major River Systems
