{"id":33703,"date":"2018-10-30T14:03:17","date_gmt":"2018-10-30T08:33:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=33703"},"modified":"2018-10-30T14:03:17","modified_gmt":"2018-10-30T08:33:17","slug":"greater-nagalim-claims-as-nscnim-deal-nears-fruition-why-three-northeastern-states-are-agitated","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/greater-nagalim-claims-as-nscnim-deal-nears-fruition-why-three-northeastern-states-are-agitated\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Greater Nagalim\u2019 claims: As NSCN(IM) deal nears fruition, why three Northeastern states are agitated"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/indianexpress.com\/article\/explained\/greater-nagalim-claims-as-nscnim-deal-nears-fruition-why-three-northeastern-states-are-agitated-4956070\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2018Greater Nagalim\u2019 claims: As NSCN(IM) deal nears fruition, why three Northeastern states are agitated (Indian Express)<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>Context:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Center may concluding a final agreement with the NSCN(IM) before Christmas.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It has arisen fresh apprehensions in Assam, Arunachal Pradesh and Manipur that <\/span><b>large chunks of their territories may be lost to a \u201cGreater Nagalim\u201d.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Why is it in news?<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe Framework Agreement\u201d signed with the government of India in August 2015 \u201crecognises the <\/span><b>legitimate right of the Nagas to integration of all Naga territories<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, it took over two years after the signing of the Framework Agreement, until November 17, 2017 for a Working Committee of six Naga National Political Groups to sign <\/span><b>another agreement with R N Ravi, the government interlocutor for the Naga peace process, as part of the run-up to the final accord.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>The map of Greater Nagalim:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The map of Greater Nagalim comprising \u201call Naga-inhabited areas\u201d shows a 1,20,000 sq km sprawl <\/span><b>across the Northeast and Myanmar.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It covers a sizeable portion of:<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Assam\u2019s Tinsukia, Charaideo, Sivasagar, Jorhat, Golaghat, Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao districts;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">all of Longding, Tirap, Changlang, Lohit and Namsai districts in Arunachal; and<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">large parts of Manipur\u2019s Ukhrul, Senapati, Chandel and Tamenglong districts.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The area of Nagaland state is only 16,527 sq km, a fraction of the NSCN(IM)\u2019s \u201cGreater Nagalim\u201d.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-12680 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blog.forumias.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/maps.jpg?resize=432%2C422\" alt=\"\" width=\"432\" height=\"422\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/maps.jpg?w=432&amp;ssl=1 432w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/maps.jpg?resize=150%2C147&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/maps.jpg?resize=300%2C293&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 432px) 100vw, 432px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><b>What is the conflict between Assam and Nagaland?<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Assam has complained of <\/span><b>encroachment by Nagaland<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Assam says Nagaland <\/span><b>has set up three civil subdivisions on Assamese territory<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Friction over the boundary has <\/span><b>led to several rounds of violence, leading to over a hundred deaths.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nagaland insists that <\/span><b>more land that has \u201chistorically\u201d belonged to the Nagas continues to remain under Assam\u2019s \u201coccupation\u201d.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The state says that the <\/span><b>16-point agreement of 1960 that led to its creation included the \u201crestoration\u201d of all Naga territories<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> transferred out of the Naga Hills after the British annexed Assam in 1826.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Conclusion:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>stand of the Assam government is clear<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They will <\/span><b>not allow any change to the state\u2019s geography<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u2018Greater Nagalim\u2019 claims: As NSCN(IM) deal nears fruition, why three Northeastern states are agitated (Indian Express) Context: Center may concluding a final agreement with the NSCN(IM) before Christmas.
