{"id":33708,"date":"2018-10-30T14:05:40","date_gmt":"2018-10-30T08:35:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=33708"},"modified":"2018-10-30T14:05:40","modified_gmt":"2018-10-30T08:35:40","slug":"surge-in-oxygen-levels-led-to-explosion-of-life-study","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/surge-in-oxygen-levels-led-to-explosion-of-life-study\/","title":{"rendered":"Surge in oxygen levels led to explosion of life: study"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/sci-tech\/energy-and-environment\/surge-in-oxygen-levels-led-to-explosion-of-life-study\/article20944908.ece\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Surge in oxygen levels led to explosion of life: study<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>Context:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recently studies say that a boost in levels of oxygen may have caused a three-fold increase in biodiversity during between 445 and 485 million years ago.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Why is it in news?<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This study suggests that atmospheric <\/span><b>oxygen levels did not reach and maintain modern levels for millions of years after the Cambrian explosion.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In fact, the <\/span><b>oxygenation of the atmosphere and Shallow Ocean took millions of years<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And it was only when shallow seas became <\/span><b>progressively oxygenated were the major pulses of diversification able to take place.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>What has been found?<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Researchers were able to <\/span><b>identify an oxygen increase during the Middle and Late Ordovician periods.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They also found:<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">80% increase in oxygen levels where oxygen constituted about 14% of the atmosphere during the Darriwilian Stage (<\/span><b>Middle Ordovician 460-465 million years ago<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) and<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Increased to as high as 24% of the atmosphere by the mid-Katian (<\/span><b>Late Ordovician 450-455 million years ago<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>The three fold increase:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The explosion of diversity, recognised as the Great Ordovician Biodiversification Event, brought about:<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the rise of various marine life,<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tremendous change across species families and types,<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">as well as changes to the Earth, starting at the bottom of the ocean floors.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Great Ordovician Biodiversification Event:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Ordovician radiation, or the great Ordovician biodiversification event (GOBE), was an <\/span><b>evolutionary radiation of animal life throughout<\/b> <b>the Ordovician period<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 40 million years after the Cambrian explosion.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The distinctive Cambrian fauna <\/span><b>fizzled out to be replaced with a Palaeozoic fauna rich in suspension feeder and pelagic animals.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It brought about <\/span><b>rise of various marine lives, tremendous change across species families and types, as well as changes to the Earth<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, starting at the bottom of the ocean floors.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Surge in oxygen levels led to explosion of life: study Context: Recently studies say that a boost in levels of oxygen may have caused a three-fold increase in biodiversity during between 445 and 485 million years ago.
