France\u2019s claim to <strong>Hunter and Matthew Islands<\/strong> is <strong>disputed by Vanuatu<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>Physical Features<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>The main island, <strong>Grande Terre<\/strong>, is a <strong>long, narrow landmass<\/strong>, approximately <strong>310 miles (500 km)<\/strong> long and <strong>30 miles (50 km)<\/strong> wide.<\/li>\n<li>It is <strong>mountainous<\/strong>, with two prominent peaks: <strong>Mount Humboldt (1,617 m)<\/strong> and <strong>Mount Pani\u00e9 (1,628 m)<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The island is bordered by a <strong>coral barrier reef<\/strong>, forming a large <strong>lagoon<\/strong> designated as a <strong>UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The nearby <strong data-start=\"384\" data-end=\"403\">Loyalty Islands<\/strong>\u2014Ouv\u00e9a, Lifou, and Mar\u00e9\u2014are made of coral limestone and have little surface water.<\/li>\n<li>New Caledonia experiences a <strong>subtropical climate<\/strong> with <strong>year-round rainfall<\/strong>, especially from <strong>December to March<\/strong> during the cyclone season.<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>east coast<\/strong> receives heavy rainfall (over <strong>3,000 mm annually<\/strong>), while the <strong>west coast<\/strong> is relatively drier (less than <strong>1,000 mm annually<\/strong>).<\/li>\n<li>Temperatures are generally <strong>moderate<\/strong>, averaging <strong>22\u201324\u00b0C<\/strong>, with <strong>cyclonic winds<\/strong> common late in the hot season.<\/li>\n<li>The island\u2019s vegetation includes <strong data-start=\"846\" data-end=\"882\">rainforests, mangroves, savannas<\/strong> with <strong data-start=\"888\" data-end=\"905\">niaouli trees<\/strong>, and <strong data-start=\"911\" data-end=\"933\">sclerophyll shrubs<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>It is home to <strong data-start=\"949\" data-end=\"973\">Amborella trichopoda<\/strong>, a rare plant linking conifers and flowering plants.<\/li>\n<li>There are <strong data-start=\"1038\" data-end=\"1076\">no native land mammals except bats<\/strong>, and <strong data-start=\"1082\" data-end=\"1137\">no venomous reptiles or malaria-carrying mosquitoes<\/strong>.
