{"id":33779,"date":"2018-10-30T14:22:01","date_gmt":"2018-10-30T08:52:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=33779"},"modified":"2018-10-30T14:22:01","modified_gmt":"2018-10-30T08:52:01","slug":"politics-and-padmavatith-ed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/politics-and-padmavatith-ed\/","title":{"rendered":"\u00a0Politics and Padmavati(TH Ed)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/opinion\/editorial\/politics-and-padmavati\/article20722882.ece\"><strong>Politics and Padmavati<\/strong><\/a><strong>(TH Ed)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Context <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Padmavati row<\/p>\n<p><strong>Letter from Salman Rushdie<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In February 1989, days after Ayatollah Khomeini of Iran had issued a\u00a0<em>fatwa<\/em>\u00a0against him for his novel\u00a0<em>The Satanic Verses<\/em>, Salman Rushdie published an open letter to Rajiv Gandhi, then Prime Minister<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>He reminded the Prime Minister that his book had already been banned in India in October 1988, under the Customs Act, and that while issuing the curb on its import the Finance Ministry clarified that the \u201cban did not detract from the literary and artistic merit of Rushdie\u2019s work\u201d. \u201cThanks for the good review,\u201d wrote Rushdie, adding that it appeared \u201cas if your Government has become unable or unwilling to resist pressure from more or less any extremist religious grouping\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Recalling the letter<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It is worth recalling that letter, as it provides a benchmark to map the race to the bottom in the current row over\u00a0<em>Padmavati<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Disregard of SC judgement<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The actions of the Chief ministers and those batting for a ban on <em>Padmavati<\/em> are in complete disregard of the Supreme Court judgment in\u00a0<strong><em>S. Rangarajan v. P. Jagjivan Ram<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0that the state cannot cite concerns about a \u201chostile audience\u201d in curbing freedom of expression<\/p>\n<p><strong>Real issue<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The issue here is no longer\u00a0<em>Padmavati<\/em> or its artistic merit.
