{"id":33875,"date":"2018-10-30T14:47:12","date_gmt":"2018-10-30T09:17:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=33875"},"modified":"2018-10-30T14:47:12","modified_gmt":"2018-10-30T09:17:12","slug":"the-danger-of-electoral-bonds","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/the-danger-of-electoral-bonds\/","title":{"rendered":"The danger of electoral bonds"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/opinion\/op-ed\/the-danger-of-electoral-bonds\/article20602008.ece\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The danger of electoral bonds<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>Context<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The electoral bonds characterstic of keeping secrecy and anonymity makes it an instrument to ease the flow of black money to political parties<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Paradise Papers leaks<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All these Indians on the Paradise Papers leaks had their association with shell companies set up to siphon vast sums of money out of India and into a tax haven under the cloak of secrecy.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The electoral bonds share with tax havens the two characteristics that make the latter such attractive destinations for black money: secrecy and anonymity.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>What may be the implications?<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 255th Law Commission Report on Electoral Reforms observed that opacity in political funding results in \u201clobbying and capture\u201d of the government by big donors.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the NGO, 69% of the income of political parties is from unknown sources.
