{"id":33941,"date":"2018-10-30T15:02:50","date_gmt":"2018-10-30T09:32:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=33941"},"modified":"2018-10-30T15:02:50","modified_gmt":"2018-10-30T09:32:50","slug":"beyond-piketty-on-income-inequality","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/beyond-piketty-on-income-inequality\/","title":{"rendered":"Beyond Piketty: on income inequality\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/opinion\/op-ed\/beyond-piketty\/article20539793.ece\"><b>Beyond Piketty: on income inequality\u00a0<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>Context:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With state elections being just a stone throw away, debate on the Indian economy has become increasingly focused.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It has been demonstrated that rising income inequality is a by-product of growth in the developed world. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Poverty and inequality:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is plausible that <\/span><b>poverty reduction slowed in 2016-17 because of deceleration of income growth<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And huge shocks of <\/span><b>demonetisation and the GST to the informal sector have aggravated income inequality<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In sum, regardless of the longer-term outlook and presumed but dubious benefits of the policy shocks, <\/span><b>the distress of large segments of the Indian population was avoidable<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Conclusion:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both demonetisation and GST, are guaranteed to yield long-term benefits, regardless of large-scale hardships, loss of livelihoods, closure of small and medium enterprises and slowdown of agriculture.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But critics reject these claims lock, stock and barrel.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Lack of robust evidence is as much a problem for the official proponents of these policies as it is for the critics.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hence the debate continues unchanged with frequent aggressive incidences.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Beyond Piketty: on income inequality\u00a0 Context: With state elections being just a stone throw away, debate on the Indian economy has become increasingly focused.
