{"id":339585,"date":"2025-06-06T14:09:27","date_gmt":"2025-06-06T08:39:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/?p=339585"},"modified":"2025-06-10T18:33:06","modified_gmt":"2025-06-10T13:03:06","slug":"kichan-and-menar-wetlands","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/kichan-and-menar-wetlands\/","title":{"rendered":"Kichan and Menar Wetlands"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>News:<\/strong> Khichan in Phalodi and Menar in Udaipur have been designated as Ramsar sites. <strong>Kichan and Menar Wetlands<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>About Kichan and Menar Wetlands<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_339589\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-339589\" style=\"width: 433px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-339589\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Source-MoEFCC.png?resize=433%2C323&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"433\" height=\"323\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Source-MoEFCC.png?resize=300%2C224&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Source-MoEFCC.png?resize=1024%2C766&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Source-MoEFCC.png?resize=768%2C574&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Source-MoEFCC.png?w=1090&amp;ssl=1 1090w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 433px) 100vw, 433px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-339589\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source &#8211; MoEFCC<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>Menar Wetland<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Location:<\/strong> It is located in the Menar and Kheroda villages in <strong>Vallabhnagar taluka, Udaipur District of Rajasthan.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The Menar Wetland Complex is a <strong>freshwater monsoon wetland complex<\/strong> formed by <strong>three ponds<\/strong> &#8211; <strong>Braham talab, Dhand talab and Kheroda talab<\/strong>, and <strong>agricultural land<\/strong> that connects the latter two.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Importance<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Migratory birds:<\/strong> During the monsoon season the farmland floods provide <strong>habitat for 110 species of waterbirds<\/strong> of which 67 are migratory.\n<ul>\n<li>Among the <strong>notable bird species<\/strong> at the site are the <strong>critically endangered white-rumped vulture and long-billed vulture.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Plant species:<\/strong> Over <strong>70 plant species<\/strong> are found, including <strong>mango trees around Braham talab<\/strong> that host a large colony of <strong>Indian flying foxes<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Community participation:<\/strong> It is recognized as one of the <strong>best examples of community-led conservation<\/strong> in Rajasthan, with residents playing a key role in conserving wildlife by preventing poaching or fishing.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Khichan Wetland<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Location:<\/strong> Khichan Wetland is located in the Phalodi tehsil of Phalodi district, Rajasthan, India, in the northern Thar Desert.<\/li>\n<li>It comprises <strong>two water bodies<\/strong> &#8211; <strong>Ratri nadi (river)<\/strong> and <strong>Vijaysagar talab (pond),<\/strong> riparian habitat and scrub land.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Fauna and flora<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>This desert ecosystem supports <strong>drought-resistant plant species<\/strong> that provide habitat for over 150 species of birds.<\/li>\n<li>The site is especially recognised for hosting <strong>large wintering flocks of migratory demoiselle cranes (locally known as Kurjan),<\/strong> making up over 22,000 individuals each year.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Note<\/strong>: Previously, only <strong>Keoladeo Ghana National Park in Bharatpur<\/strong> and <strong>Sambhar Lake in Jaipur<\/strong> had Ramsar site status in the state.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>India<\/strong> now has a total of <strong>91 Ramsar sites.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>News: Khichan in Phalodi and Menar in Udaipur have been designated as Ramsar sites.
