{"id":33986,"date":"2018-10-30T15:19:47","date_gmt":"2018-10-30T09:49:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=33986"},"modified":"2018-10-30T15:19:47","modified_gmt":"2018-10-30T09:49:47","slug":"france-wants-to-work-with-india-in-indo-pacific","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/france-wants-to-work-with-india-in-indo-pacific\/","title":{"rendered":"France wants to work with India in Indo-Pacific"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/news\/national\/france-wants-to-work-with-india-in-indo-pacific\/article20460960.ece\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">France wants to work with India in Indo-Pacific<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>Context<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">France and India have a \u201cspecial and specific\u201d interest in the Indian Ocean, and would prefer to conduct their exchanges across the Indo-Pacific bilaterally.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Growing cooperation<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The cooperation is growing in the Indian Ocean, where both India and France have focal positions.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both the countries are in a process of forming a defence and security partnership in the Indo-Pacific.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This new cooperation will deal in counter-terrorism, defence hardware, nuclear energy, and space cooperation during the upcoming visit of Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian to India.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Large territory<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">France is the only western country with large territory in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR) including the Reunion Islands, spanning about two million square kilometres of an Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">France has a population of one million French Citizens in the region, including about 30% of Indian origin.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The French navy maintains bases in the UAE, Djibouti as well as in Reunion, with a total of 20,000 forces permanently based in the IOR.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">France is India\u2019s oldest strategic partner, and has conducted India\u2019s first international \u2018Varuna\u2019 joint naval exercises since 1983.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>France wants to work with India in Indo-Pacific Context France and India have a \u201cspecial and specific\u201d interest in the Indian Ocean, and would prefer to conduct their exchanges across the Indo-Pacific bilaterally.
