PIB<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<ul>\n<li>It is a <strong>herbaceous plant<\/strong> of the <strong>umbelliferae family<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>It is a <strong>perennial plant<\/strong> which produces <strong>oleo-gum resin<\/strong> from the <strong>roots<\/strong> after <strong>five years of plantation.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Climatic conditions required:<\/strong> It thrives in <strong>cold, arid environments<\/strong>.\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Soil:<\/strong> The plant prefers <strong>sandy, well-drained soil<\/strong> with <strong>low moisture<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Rainfall:<\/strong> Ideally <strong>annual rainfall of 200 mm or less <\/strong>is good, though it can <strong>tolerate up to 300 mm<\/strong> in cultivated regions like the Indian Himalaya.\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Excessive rainfall or high soil moisture<\/strong> can hinder growth.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Temperature:<\/strong> It flourishes in temperatures of <strong>10-20\u00b0 C,<\/strong> tolerates highs of up to 40\u00b0 C, and withstands winter lows down to \u20134\u00b0 C.\n<ul>\n<li>In <strong>extremely dry and cold weather<\/strong>, heeng plants typically become dormant to survive.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Suitability in India:<\/strong> These requirements make <strong>high-altitude, semi-arid regions like Lahaul-Spiti and Uttarkashi<\/strong> in India suitable for its cultivation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Significance<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It is one of the widely used <strong>spices<\/strong> in Indian cuisine since time immemorial.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Benefits:<\/strong> It has a range of <strong>medicinal properties<\/strong>, including relief for <strong>digestive, spasmodic and stomach disorders, asthma and bronchitis. <\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It is also commonly used to help with <strong>painful or excessive bleeding during menstruation and premature labour.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Asafoetida (heeng) cultivation in India<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>India is world\u2019s <strong>largest consumer<\/strong> of heeng.<\/li>\n<li>There is <strong>no production of heeng<\/strong> in India and currently, it is being <strong>imported<\/strong> annually from <strong>Afghanistan, Iran and Uzbekistan<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Government initiative<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The government launched a national effort to promote indigenous cultivation of heeng under the <strong>CSIR-Institute of Himalayan Bioresource Technology (IHBT) in Palampur, Himachal Pradesh<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>As part of this programme, CSIR-IHBT <strong>procured heeng seeds, initially from Iran, and<\/strong> later from <strong>Afghanistan<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Import permits were taken from the <strong>ICAR-National Bureau of Plant Genetic Resources (NBPGR) in New Delhi,<\/strong> the designated nodal agency for plant germplasm import and quarantine.<\/li>\n<li>Controlled trials were conducted at IHBT Palampur and its <strong>Centre for High Altitude Biology in Ribling in Lahaul &amp; Spiti.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>To further institutionalise this progress, the <strong>Heeng Germplasm Resource Centre was established<\/strong> at IHBT Palampur and was formally inaugurated on March 5, 2022.\n<ul>\n<li>It serves as the national hub for conservation, research, training, seed production, and plant propagation vis-\u00e0-vis heeng.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Villages that became early adopters of this initiative were:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Lahaul &amp;
