{"id":34033,"date":"2018-10-30T15:33:41","date_gmt":"2018-10-30T10:03:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=34033"},"modified":"2018-10-30T15:33:41","modified_gmt":"2018-10-30T10:03:41","slug":"asean-summit-modi-hard-sells-india-as-an-attractive-investment-destination-the-hindu-and-eastern-promise-the-hindu","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/asean-summit-modi-hard-sells-india-as-an-attractive-investment-destination-the-hindu-and-eastern-promise-the-hindu\/","title":{"rendered":"ASEAN summit: Modi hard-sells India as an attractive investment destination (The Hindu) And\u00a0Eastern promise (The Hindu)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/news\/national\/asean-summit-modi-hard-sells-india-as-an-attractive-investment-destination\/article20385010.ece\"><b>ASEAN summit: Modi hard-sells India as an attractive investment destination<\/b><\/a><b> (The Hindu) And\u00a0<\/b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/opinion\/editorial\/eastern-promise\/article20395812.ece\"><b>Eastern promise<\/b><\/a><b> (The Hindu)<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Context<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prime Minister Narendra Modi\u2019s visit to the Philippines to attend the ASEAN-India summit, the East Asia Summit and the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership summit has put India centre-stage in the Asian region now referred to as \u201cIndo-Pacific\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>What is ASEAN?<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) comprises of Indonesia, Singapore, Philippines, Malaysia, Brunei, Thailand, Cambodia, Lao PDR, Myanmar and Vietnam.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India\u2019s relationship with ASEAN is an outcome of the significant changes in the world\u2019s political and economic scenario since the early 1990s.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Look East Policy<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2018Look East Policy\u2019 is India\u2019s research for economic space.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Look East Policy has today turned into a dynamic and action oriented \u2018Act East Policy.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PM at the 12th ASEAN India Summit and the 9th East Asia Summit held in Nay Pyi Taw, Myanmar, in November, 2014, formally enunciated the Act East Policy.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India\u2019s relationship with ASEAN is a key pillar of our foreign policy and the foundation of our Act East Policy.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>The Quad pivot<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Japan-proposed, U.S.-endorsed plan, including Australia, it is necessary that India analyze the impact of this admission on all its relations.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a growing economy with ambitious domestic targets, India\u2019s own needs often clashwith those of its neighbours.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More connectivity will eventually mean more competition, whether it is for trade, water resources, or energy.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>What is the significance of the meet?<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The meet comes after Japan publicly proposed the quadrilateral with India, US and Australia and then Canberra indicated its willingness to be a part of the political-security dialogue among the four democracies<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The meet aims to counter China\u2019s aggressive maritime expansion under its Belt and Road Initiative.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>What is the Look East Policy?<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was launched by former Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao in 1991.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It had only south-eastern countries to aim under the policy<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It aims at reconnecting Asia as part of India\u2019s economic globalization.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Why do a separate policy of East Asia is needed?<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Economic slump and balanced of payment crisis in mid-1991 in India due to Gulf war.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Collapse of Soviet Union (cold war end- 1990), created a strategic and economic vacuum in India.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">China&#8217;s economic reform (shift from communism to market socialism) prompted India to reach out to south east Asia to avoid falling into a subordinate political and economic role in the region.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India&#8217;s desire to stabilize north eastern states where insurgency was picking up it pace.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>What are the objectives of look East policy?<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Regional economic integration and ties with ASEAN countries- BIMSTEC, Mekong Ganga etc.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To trace back and review the implementation of the Look East Policy over the past 30 years.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To gather all parties involved directly or indirectly with the Look East Policy and create new cooperation networks through an academic event.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To provide an avenue for sharing of opinion and exchanging ideas while discussing the achievements of the Look East Policy and its future.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To formally gather official feedback through speeches, forums, paper presentations, and journal article publications.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Development of northeastern states- connectivity with south eastern countries via roads, railways etc and infrastructure development.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To balance China\u2019s influence in this region.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diplomatic engagement with southeast to border security and defence ties.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>ASEAN summit: Modi hard-sells India as an attractive investment destination (The Hindu) And\u00a0Eastern promise (The Hindu) Context Prime Minister Narendra Modi\u2019s visit to the Philippines to attend the ASEAN-India summit, the East Asia Summit and the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership summit has put India centre-stage in the Asian region now referred to as \u201cIndo-Pacific\u201d.
