Devadhar, A.V. Patwardhan, and N.A. Dravid<\/strong>, in <strong>Pune<\/strong>, India, on <strong>June 12, 1905.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Objectives:<\/strong> Its objectives were to <strong>train individuals<\/strong> who were willing to devote their lives to the <strong>country&#8217;s cause in a religious spirit, for political education and agitation<\/strong>, and to promote the <strong>national interest<\/strong> of the Indian people <strong>through constitutional means<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The members of the Society were considered as <strong>young missionaries<\/strong> of Indian nationalism.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Prominent members:<\/strong> Several young Indian nationalists including <strong>S. Srinivas Shastri, Hriday Nath Kunzru, and A.V. Thakkar <\/strong>enrolled as members.\n<ul>\n<li>Later <strong>M. K. Gandhi<\/strong> also became a member of Society under guidance of Gokhale.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Headquarter: <\/strong>The organization has its <strong>headquarters in Pune (Poona)<\/strong> and <strong>branches<\/strong> in Chennai (Madras), Mumbai (Bombay), Allahabad, Nagpur among other places.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Presidents:<\/strong> <strong>G. K. Gokhale<\/strong> remained its president from <strong>1905-1915<\/strong>, followed by <strong>V. S. Srinivas Shastri (1915-1927)<\/strong> and <strong>Gopal Krishna Devdhar (1928-1936).<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The Society began publishing <strong><em>the Hitavada<\/em><\/strong>, its <strong>english-language journal<\/strong> from <strong>Nagpur, in 1911.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>In <strong>1930<\/strong>, the society established the <strong>Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics<\/strong>, <strong>Pune<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Post-Independence work<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>The SIS <strong>continues to be an active<\/strong> organization today, more than a century after its establishment.<\/li>\n<li>While some of its activities have evolved and changed over time, the SIS remains <strong>committed<\/strong> to its <strong>original mission of promoting education, social reform, and political freedom<\/strong> in India.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>News: Tensions have flared between the Pune-based Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics (GIPE) and parent Servants of India Society (SIS) over control of a key bank account.
