TNIE<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<ul>\n<li>The project was launched in <strong>1975<\/strong> with the support of the <strong>United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO),<\/strong> initially focusing on <strong>Bhitarkanika National Park<\/strong> in Odisha.<\/li>\n<li>The project was <strong>later expanded<\/strong> to cover Uttaranchal, Rajasthan, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Andamans, Assam, Bihar and Nagaland where special <strong>rearing stations<\/strong> were constructed.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Aim:<\/strong> The project aims to <strong>conserve all three crocodile species<\/strong> found in India:\n<ul>\n<li>saltwater crocodiles (Crocodylus porosus)<\/li>\n<li>mugger crocodiles (Crocodylus palustris)<\/li>\n<li>gharials (Gavialis gangeticus).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Objectives of CCP<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>To ensure that the <strong>breeding of species remain captive<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Assortment of <strong>eggs<\/strong> from regular haunt, ensuing <strong>crosshatching<\/strong> and nurturing of crocodiles in captivity to lessen mortality because of the natural predators and lastly released into the wild.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Outcomes:<\/strong> Over five decades, these initiatives have become <strong>one of India\u2019s most successful wildlife conservation programmes.<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Population recovery:<\/strong> The project successfully brought crocodilian species back from the brink of extinction.<\/li>\n<li>For example, <strong>Bhitarkanika<\/strong> now hosts 1,826 <strong>saltwater crocodiles<\/strong>, <strong>Satkosia<\/strong> gorge is home to 16 <strong>gharials<\/strong>, and around 300 <strong>muggers<\/strong> live in Odisha\u2019s rivers.<\/li>\n<li><strong>India<\/strong> now harbors <strong>80% of the world\u2019s wild gharial population.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Crocodiles in India<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>India is home to three main kinds of crocodile species \u2013 the <strong>gharial (critically endangered), the salt water crocodile or salties (least concern), and the muggers (vulnerable). <\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Threats:<\/strong> These species face increasing threats from <strong>habitat loss<\/strong>, <strong>poachers<\/strong>, pollution, riparian agriculture, artificial embankments, construction of barrages and dams, and illegal sand-mining.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure id=\"attachment_340874\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-340874\" style=\"width: 440px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-340874\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Source-Wildlife-SOS.png?resize=440%2C537&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"440\" height=\"537\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Source-Wildlife-SOS.png?resize=246%2C300&amp;ssl=1 246w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Source-Wildlife-SOS.png?w=706&amp;ssl=1 706w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 440px) 100vw, 440px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-340874\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source &#8211;
