Yet, an equally urgent and neglected issue is the demand by Adivasi\/Scheduled Tribe (ST) communities for the recognition of their distinct faiths in the Census.<\/p>\n<p>For detailed information on <strong>Caste Census <\/strong><strong>\u2013 Significance and Challenges<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/upsc-current-affairs-news-caste-based-census-in-india\/\">read this article here <\/a><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Constitutional Violations in Current Census Practices<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Exclusion of ST Faiths: <\/strong>The Census lists <strong>only six major religions<\/strong> and a vague <strong>\u2018<\/strong><strong>Other Religious Persuasion<\/strong><strong>\u2019 <\/strong><strong>(ORP)<\/strong> category. It omits faiths followed by ST communities, despite their distinct spiritual traditions.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ignored Legal Protections: <\/strong>The Constitution guarantees the cultural and religious rights of STs through the <strong>Fifth and Sixth Schedules<\/strong> and <strong>Articles 25, 26, 371A, and 371B<\/strong>. <strong>Denying recognition<\/strong> of their faiths <strong>violates these safeguards<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Forced Religious Misidentification: <\/strong>The lack of a specific option <strong>forces STs to identify<\/strong> with dominant religions or use the unclear ORP category, undermining their <strong>Article 25 rights<\/strong> to freely practise their faith.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2><strong>Census Data Reveals Identity Suppression<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li><strong> Underrepresentation in ORP: <\/strong>In the <strong>2011 Census<\/strong>, India\u2019s ST population was <strong>10.43 crore (8.6%)<\/strong>, yet <strong>only 79 lakh (0.66%)<\/strong> registered under ORP. This shows <strong>widespread forced misidentification<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Awareness Boosts Accurate Reporting: <\/strong>In <strong>Jharkhand<\/strong>, <strong>49 lakh individuals identified as Sarna<\/strong> due to awareness campaigns. In <strong>Madhya Pradesh<\/strong>, <strong>10 lakh registered as Gond<\/strong>. When informed, STs <strong>choose to declare their faiths<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Lack of Information in Rural Areas: <\/strong>Most Adivasis live in remote areas and <strong>lack awareness<\/strong> of the ORP option. Without guidance, they are <strong>absorbed into incorrect categories<\/strong>, distorting the religious demography.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2><strong>Hindutva Narrative and Cultural Assimilation<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Targeting of Christian STs: RSS-affiliated groups<\/strong> have intensified attacks on <strong>Christian converts<\/strong> and missionaries among STs, promoting <strong>ghar wapasi<\/strong> under a Hindutva agenda.<\/li>\n<li><strong>State-Driven Cultural Absorption<\/strong><strong>: <\/strong>Government-backed campaigns introduce <strong>Hindu symbols, temples, and chants<\/strong> in tribal areas. <strong>Soil from ST groves<\/strong> was taken for the <strong>Ram temple<\/strong>, altering tribal sacred spaces.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ideological Influence in Education: <\/strong>In <strong>Eklavya schools<\/strong>, ST children are taught <strong>Hindu customs<\/strong>, not their own. <strong>RSS-run schools<\/strong> flourish using <strong>CSR funds<\/strong>, reinforcing assimilation efforts.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2><strong>Double Standards and Erosion of Identity<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li><strong> Selective Recognition of ST Status<\/strong>: <strong>Christian STs are denied recognition<\/strong>, while <strong>Hindu-identifying STs are accepted<\/strong>. This reveals a <strong>political double standard<\/strong>, not a legal principle.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Broader Basis for ST Classification: <\/strong>ST status is based on <strong>social, cultural, and historical factors<\/strong>, not religious affiliation. <strong>Religious bias undermines constitutional intent<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Threat to Pluralism: <\/strong>The <strong>\u2018<\/strong><strong>one nation, one culture<\/strong><strong>\u2019<\/strong> model suppresses ST diversity. STs represent a <strong>rich mosaic of languages, traditions, and beliefs<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2><strong>Urgent Call for Census Reform<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Jharkhand<\/strong><strong>\u2019<\/strong><strong>s 2020 Resolution<\/strong><strong>: <\/strong>Jharkhand unanimously passed a resolution seeking <strong>Sarna<\/strong><strong>\u2019<\/strong><strong>s inclusion<\/strong> in the Census. It was sent to the Centre, but <strong>no action was taken<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Need for Nationwide Recognition: <\/strong>STs across India follow <strong>diverse traditional faiths<\/strong>.
