{"id":341425,"date":"2025-06-26T16:18:52","date_gmt":"2025-06-26T10:48:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/?p=341425"},"modified":"2025-06-26T16:18:52","modified_gmt":"2025-06-26T10:48:52","slug":"tansen","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/tansen\/","title":{"rendered":"Tansen"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>News:<\/strong> The Madhya Pradesh High Court dismissed an appeal seeking permission to perform religious and cultural activities at the tomb of Tansen in Gwalior.<\/p>\n<h2>About Tansen<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_341428\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-341428\" style=\"width: 439px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-341428\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Source-Punjab-Kesri.png?resize=439%2C249&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"439\" height=\"249\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Source-Punjab-Kesri.png?resize=300%2C170&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Source-Punjab-Kesri.png?resize=1024%2C580&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Source-Punjab-Kesri.png?resize=768%2C435&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Source-Punjab-Kesri.png?resize=1536%2C870&amp;ssl=1 1536w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Source-Punjab-Kesri.png?w=1556&amp;ssl=1 1556w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 439px) 100vw, 439px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-341428\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source &#8211; Punjab Kesri<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Birth:<\/strong> He was born into a Hindu Gaur Brahmin family in <strong>Gwalior as Ramtanu Pandey<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Guru:<\/strong> He was discipled to <strong>Swami Haridas<\/strong>, the legendary <strong>composer from Vrindavan<\/strong> and court musician of the stellar Gwalior court of <strong>Raja Man Singh Tomar<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Career and patronage<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>He got his <strong>first break<\/strong> as musician and composer in the court of <strong>Raja Man Singh Tomar of Gwalior.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>He spent most of his adult life in the court and patronage of the <strong>Hindu king of Rewa, Raja Ramchandra Singh (1555\u20131592).<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>He joined <strong>Akbar&#8217;s court<\/strong> at about the <strong>age of 60 in 1562.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>He was among the <strong>Navaratnas (nine jewels)<\/strong> at the court of Akbar.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Titles:<\/strong> The title &#8220;<strong>Mian<\/strong>&#8221; was bestowed upon him by Mughal Emperor <strong>Akbar<\/strong>.\n<ul>\n<li>While &#8220;<strong>Tansen&#8221;<\/strong> was his common name, bestowed upon him by <strong>Raja Vikramjit of Gwalior.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Musical contribution<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>He is remembered for his epic <strong>Dhrupad compositions<\/strong>, creating several new rags.<\/li>\n<li>He was instrumental in establishing the very <strong>first musical gharana the &#8220;Gwalior Gharana<\/strong>&#8221; of <strong>Hindustani music<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>He was also an instrumentalist who <strong>popularised<\/strong> and improved the <strong>plucked rabab (of Central Asian origin). <\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Compositions:<\/strong> Tansen&#8217;s musical compositions covered many <strong>themes, and employed Dhrupad<\/strong>.\n<ul>\n<li>Most of these were derived from the Hindu Puranas, <strong>composed in Braj Bhasha<\/strong>, and written in <strong>praise of gods and goddesses<\/strong> such as Ganesha, Saraswati, Surya, Shiva, Vishnu.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Death:<\/strong> Tansen died in <strong>1586 in Delhi.<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Grave:<\/strong> His remains were buried in the <strong>mausoleum complex of his Sufi master Shaikh Muhammad Ghaus in Gwalior.<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>The <strong>tomb of Hazrat Sheikh Muhammad Ghaus<\/strong> was declared a <strong>protected monument of national importance in 1962<\/strong> under the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act, 1958.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>News: The Madhya Pradesh High Court dismissed an appeal seeking permission to perform religious and cultural activities at the tomb of Tansen in Gwalior.
