{"id":341762,"date":"2025-07-01T14:49:33","date_gmt":"2025-07-01T09:19:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/?p=341762"},"modified":"2025-07-01T14:49:33","modified_gmt":"2025-07-01T09:19:33","slug":"bar-council-of-india-bci","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/bar-council-of-india-bci\/","title":{"rendered":"Bar Council of India (BCI)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>News:<\/strong> The Bar Council of India (BCI) has clarified that any Master of Laws (LL.M.) programme offered without its prior approval, will be considered unauthorised.<\/p>\n<h2>About Bar Council of India (BCI)<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_341765\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-341765\" style=\"width: 380px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-341765\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Source-BCI-1.png?resize=380%2C362&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"380\" height=\"362\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Source-BCI-1.png?resize=300%2C286&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Source-BCI-1.png?w=482&amp;ssl=1 482w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 380px) 100vw, 380px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-341765\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source &#8211; BCI<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<ul>\n<li>It is a <strong>statutory body<\/strong> created by Parliament under the <strong>Advocates Act, 1961.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Purpose:<\/strong> It was established to <strong>regulate and represent the Indian Bar<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Functions:<\/strong> The following statutory functions under <strong>Section 7<\/strong> cover the Bar Council\u2019s regulatory and representative mandate:\n<ul>\n<li>To lay down standards of professional <strong>conduct and etiquette<\/strong> for advocates.<\/li>\n<li>To lay down procedure to be followed by its disciplinary committee and the disciplinary committees of each <strong>State Bar Council<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>To safeguard the <strong>rights, privileges and interests of advocates<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>To promote and support <strong>law reform<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>To promote <strong>legal education<\/strong> and to lay down standards of legal education.<\/li>\n<li>To <strong>recognise Universities<\/strong> whose degree in law shall be a qualification for enrolment as an advocate.<\/li>\n<li>The BCI <strong>visits and inspects Universities<\/strong> or directs the State Bar Councils to visit and inspect Universities for this purpose.<\/li>\n<li>To organise <strong>legal aid to the poor<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>To recognise the <strong>foreign qualifications in law<\/strong> obtained outside India for the purpose of admission as an advocate in India.<\/li>\n<li>To manage and invest the <strong>funds<\/strong> of the Bar Council.<\/li>\n<li>To provide for the <strong>election of its members<\/strong> who shall run the Bar Councils.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Composition<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>It consists of <strong>members elected from each State Bar Council, the Attorney General of India, and the Solicitor General of India<\/strong> who is an <strong>ex-officio member<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The members from the <strong>State Bar Councils<\/strong> are elected for a <strong>period of five years<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The Council elects its <strong>own Chairman and Vice-Chairman<\/strong> for a period of <strong>two years<\/strong> from <strong>among its members.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>News: The Bar Council of India (BCI) has clarified that any Master of Laws (LL.M.) programme offered without its prior approval, will be considered unauthorised.
