They serve as tools for <strong>socio-economic and political empowerment<\/strong>, enabling communities to manage resources and production.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Successful Models and Economic Presence: <\/strong>India has notable cooperative giants like <strong>Amul, IFFCO, Kribhco, and NAFED<\/strong>. With <strong>8.14 lakh cooperatives<\/strong> and a <strong>29 crore membership base<\/strong>, India leads globally in cooperative presence.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Sectoral Engagement and Contribution<\/strong><strong>: <\/strong>About <strong>20%<\/strong> of cooperatives operate in banking; the rest are active in <strong>fisheries, dairy, housing, logistics, agro-processing<\/strong>, and more. <strong>Housing, dairy, and credit<\/strong> account for <strong>54%<\/strong> of total societies. <strong>PACS<\/strong> disburse <strong>15% of short-term farm credit<\/strong> to <strong>13 crore farmers<\/strong>, and cooperatives manage <strong>30% of sugar<\/strong>, <strong>35% of fertilizer<\/strong>, <strong>20% of paddy<\/strong>, and <strong>13% of wheat procurement<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Employment and Rural Development: <\/strong>Cooperatives contribute to <strong>13.3% of direct employment<\/strong> in India. Their outreach in rural areas boosts credit access, procurement services, and economic decentralization.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2><strong>MSMEs as Drivers of Inclusive Growth<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Economic Backbone and Policy Support: <\/strong>MSMEs are vital to India&#8217;s economy. The <strong>MSME Development Act, 2006<\/strong> structured their growth. Between <strong>2020\u20132025<\/strong>, definitions were revised to include <strong>turnover-based criteria<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Contribution to Economy and Jobs: <\/strong>Of <strong>6.24 crore registered MSMEs<\/strong>, the majority are micro-units. These enterprises employ <strong>26 crore people<\/strong>, contribute <strong>33% to GDP<\/strong>, and account for <strong>48% of exports<\/strong>. Among them, <strong>34,897 are cooperative MSMEs<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Linking to Schematic Benefits: <\/strong>Identifying MSME activities helps link them to <strong>government schemes<\/strong>, improving access to <strong>finance, technology, training, and markets<\/strong> for targeted support.<\/li>\n<li><strong> Complementing Cooperatives: <\/strong>Both MSMEs and cooperatives aim at <strong>employment generation and self-reliance<\/strong>. Their convergence strengthens <strong>inclusive development<\/strong> from the bottom up.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2><strong>PM Vishwakarma Scheme and Traditional Artisans<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Recognising Traditional Skills: <\/strong>Launched on <strong>September 17, 2023<\/strong>, the scheme supports skilled artisans like <strong>carpenters, potters, blacksmiths<\/strong>, and others. These trades are passed down through the <strong>mentor-disciple tradition<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong> Targeted Support and Formalisation: <\/strong>The scheme provides <strong>training, financial aid, and market access<\/strong>. It encourages <strong>digital inclusion and product quality<\/strong>improvements.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Cooperatives as a Delivery Mechanism: <\/strong>Forming <strong>cluster-level cooperatives<\/strong> among artisans enables <strong>shared resources, collaboration<\/strong>, and structured growth.
