{"id":34234,"date":"2018-10-30T16:27:04","date_gmt":"2018-10-30T10:57:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=34234"},"modified":"2018-10-30T16:27:04","modified_gmt":"2018-10-30T10:57:04","slug":"nirmala-flags-indian-ocean-issues","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/nirmala-flags-indian-ocean-issues\/","title":{"rendered":"Nirmala flags Indian Ocean issues:\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/todays-paper\/tp-national\/nirmala-flags-indian-ocean-issues\/article19964622.ece\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nirmala flags Indian Ocean issues<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Context:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India has expressed concern at the increased militarisation in the Indian Ocean.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Concerns have also been raised against the extra-regional nations setting up a frequent presence in the region.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>International activities in the maritime domain: \u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">China has set up or acquired stakes in a series of infrastructure facilities in the region.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The country has also recently opened its first overseas military base at Djibouti in the Horn of Africa.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Chinese Navy has also maintained a steady presence of warships and submarines in the Indian Ocean under the garb of anti-piracy operations in the Gulf of Aden.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Indian Navy\u2019s mission based deployment:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Indian Navy has approved <\/span><b>new mission-based deployment plan<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for deploying mission-ready ships and aircraft along critical sea lanes of communications and choke points in Indian Ocean Region (IOR).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Objective of the mission:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Under this mission-based deployment plan, Indian Navy\u2019s 14-15 ships will be deployed year-round in region.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These deployments are expected to meet any eventuality across spectrum of operations ranging from acts of maritime terrorism and piracy to Humanitarian Aid and Disaster Relief (HADR) missions.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This also aims at maintaining 24\/7 and round the year vigil with ships being sustained and turned around on station.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The areas where these ships and corvettes and surveillance aircraft are being deployed include the Malacca Strait, North Andaman Sea, Andaman Sea, Andaman Sea including Bangladesh and Myanmar, Lakshadweep islands and Maldives, besides Madagascar and Persian Gulf.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These vessels will monitor increased Chinese presence in these areas.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Major maritime challenges faced by India:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Indian security establishment is on high alert to tackle the newest frontier of terror &#8211; Maritime Terrorism.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The terrorist organisations could <\/span><b>misuse hundreds of Indian fishing boats<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> seized over the years.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Piracy is part of a maritime insecurity <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">environment in which different threats and forms of transnational organized crime, in particular fishery crimes, are linked. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The sea provides <\/span><b>an easy way for international crime syndicates, unscrupulous traders and non-state actors to distribute their wares, or to provide belligerents with highly sophisticated weapons<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India&#8217;s land and marine boundaries is also exposed to <\/span><b>infiltration by terrorists\/militants and large scale illegal migration<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The frequent <\/span><b>straying of fishermen into neighbouring country<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> waters has not only jeopardised the safety of the fishermen but has also raised national security concerns.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Nirmala flags Indian Ocean issues:\u00a0 Context: India has expressed concern at the increased militarisation in the Indian Ocean.
